iTunes Tip: Viewing iPod Stats
With thousands of features packed into iTunes, there are so many tips and tricks to discover – today I happened to find this little beauty.

When iTunes 7 introduced their new device section, it didn’t seem like much of an improvement, but after having a good look through it I found this extra. Plug your iPod in and click on the bar graph to view additional information, such as quantity of songs and overall time.

No screenshot of the extra info?
@Andre
What Jack means is that when you click the stats bar the info under the heading “Audio” changes.
It normally just shows the amount of music you have in GB’s but when you click on it, it shows you the no. of Songs you have. If you press it again it will show you how long it would take you to play all of your audio (usually in days). Click it again and it goes back to displaying GB’s.
I never knew that. Wow, I am going to use this so much.
Another one of apple’s little hidden secrets
Very applish thing to do. I actually have seen this trick before.
In the “About This Mac” you can click on the version number and it changes to other info.
Yeah, since I found that I click on everything to see if it changes.
@wph. Not just the about mac, but also the login screen does that.
I never knew! Great little tidbit.
@Rennervater: I see. I don’t have a Mac right now so there was no way I could try it out, and the screenshot is rather unclear, so.. :}
Wow that saved me a lot of time when updating my nano. Thanks.
@ andre
It works on iTunes for windows as well. If thats what you mean.
Wow, nice find! Helps me alot.
Well, don’t you see that info at the bottom of iTunes when browsing the iPod music? It seems such a minute feature to be showcasing it here with new apps and the such…
[...] VÃa | MacApper [...]
[...] MacApper var uri = ‘http://impes.tradedoubler.com/imp?type(js)g(16321060)a(1332683)’ + new String [...]
that’s convienent
I liked this iTunes/iPod stats thing on Facebook, “What’s on my iPod?” but I wanted to get the stats without having to upload my file all the time. So, I taught myself a little VB Script and wrote a rudimentary stats/metrics program. It basically spits out a bunch of numbers and lists to a date-stamped file and it takes about a minute to run for every 1,000 songs you have. For me, it takes just over 3 minutes to run on my aging home PC (with nearly 5,000 songs).
You can save it anywhere on your PC and double-click on it and it should run. You may need to have VB.NET installed, so you can go to the Microsoft Updates site for that. I am VERY interested in feedback on this, and I’d welcome enhancements to the script as well.
