Turn A Widget Into An Application

AmnestyWidgets, a subsidiary of Mesa Dynamics, has created some amazing widget applications that I have just discovered. The most application related program is Amnestyâ„¢ Singles 1.1.2. The aim of Amnesty Singles is to convert widgets to applications and it does this through a very simple and easy to use interface.

Amnesty Widgets

It does this so well through the Mac’s drag and drop methods, all you have to do is drag the widget file into the application and select where you want to save it. And then the widget acts just like an app. It even uses the widget icon for the application icon. Amnesty Singles also adds some functionality to the widget, this includes being able to change the refresh time and window level through the application’s settings.

As soon as we used Dashboard on Tiger, we knew Panther users were missing out on something. But now they have the opportunity to use widgets anytime since Amnesty Single makes all the applications compatible with OS X 10.3.9.

The whole purpose of Dashboard is to “perform common tasks and provide you with fast access to information” but as soon as you open it, you obviously cannot use any other applications. That’s why Amnesty Single is so great, now I can use my widgets while working with any other applications.

It’s an amazing program, and for $9.99 you can’t go wrong. There is a demo version available here, but the program is definitely worth it. Check it out.

Cool, I bet we’ll see developers using this to allow Panther users to take advantage of their widgets.

Yes, however there are a few limitations developers must take note of when creating widgets. It is because some widgets rely on technology only available in Tiger. The problems are classified as AmnestySingles’s known issues.

Yeah, this is nice. But for users of 10.4, if all you want is widgets that aren’t on the dashboard, I recommend getting the free Tinkertool app ( http://www.bresink.com/osx/TinkerTool.html ) and switching the “developer mode” on in the general tab. This allows you to drag widgets off of the dashboard (drag them and deactive dashboard) and onto the desktop. Admittedly, they don’t become applications, but you don’t have to keep dashboard open and you don’t have to pay ten bucks. (Yes, I’m a cheapskate.)

Nospoon, the problem with your cheap method is that’s it’s cheap: the widgets on the desktop float over everything!
