But for users of 10.4, if all you want is widgets that aren't on the dashboard, I recommend getting the free Tinkertool app ( http://www.bresink.com/osx/TinkerTool.html ) and switching the "developer mode" on in the general tab. This allows you to drag widgets off of the dashboard (drag them and deactive dashboard) and onto the desktop. Admittedly, they don't become applications, but you don't have to keep dashboard open and you don't have to pay ten bucks. (Yes, I'm a cheapskate.) Yeah, this is nice.
