Sidenote: The simple (but powerful) note taker

SidenoteSidenote is a small, 776KB note taker that runs not in the dock, but in Finder. This handy little app can be used for anything from a simple copyboard/clipboard to an easy way to take notes in class. Here are some of it’s pros and cons.

Installation: 5/5
Installing sidenote is very simple. All you have to do is drag it to your Applications folder, double-click, and voila! Sidenote is installed.

Notes: 4/5
Note taking with sidenote is also very simple. Just move your mouse over to the left or right side of your screen, and the drawer pulls out. To change the side of the screen that the drawer pulls out of, just press the switch button: switch_off.png . From here, you can create a note with the add note button: . From there, just type in the name of your new note, choose the color, and press Ok. Editing notes is easy. Just choose, from the drop-down box at the top, which note you want to see/edit, and boom, you are at that note. Sometimes editing can be annoying, because if the stick feature (keeps the drawer out) is not on, your drawer will close once you move your mouse off of the drawer. To turn on stick, just press this button: sidenote_clip.jpg . Images and text alike can be dragged into a note, from the Finder or the internet. Currently, sidenote cannot display videos.

Other Features
Sidenote also has features such as printing/exporting notes in the RTF format, and auto-saving your notes.

The Verdict: 5/5!
Sidenote is an awesome app for note-taking, and proves very useful in many situations. Go grab a free copy over at pierre chatel’s blog (the developer), here. Enjoy!

Great app indeed. I have used it for all my notes for the past few months. The very fact that it draws out from the left on your screen really draws curiosity / attention from my classmates. When you press the switch button, observe the transition as it flies over to the other end of your screen. I wish that I could place sidenote on the top and bottom as well. Also, sometimes, when it draws out “accidentally” when my mouse hovers close to the side, it gets stuck drawn out for some reasons. i need to click somewhere inside sidenote, then move my pointer away for it to disappear.

@ Yohannes I have the same problem too (when it sticks out, even when it is supposed to close). More colors would be very cool!

I couldn’t understand some parts of this article o.us poetry, but I guess I just need to check some more resources regarding this, because it sounds interesting.
