sixtyforce: Play N64 on your Mac!
Do you ever feel like pulling that old Nintendo 64 out of the cupboard and dusting it off for a quick trip down memory lane? Why go through all the hassle of setting it up, not even sure if it works after all those years? Instead, try sixtyforce, an N64 emulator for Mac OS X.
Sixtyforce is nothing new, in fact it’s been around for 7 years, and yet the developer continues to work on releases. The result is a very mature emulator. A Universal Binary was released late last year and it got me back into playing some timeless classics like Super Smash Bros, Super Mario 64, F-ZeroX and a whole list of others that work pretty much flawlessly.

Performance varies from game to game, but is generally good enough to play. Some of the games run at full speed (60 fps) while others suffer from occasional slow-downs, which usually occur at points in the game which aren’t critical. Hah – well maybe not always.
Games, or ROMs as they are known online, can be obtained from a number of different sources on the internet. I probably don’t have to mention that downloading and playing ROMs you don’t actually own is a no-no. Games can be played with either the keyboard or with a host of different external controllers.
While sixtyforce goes for $16, the app is not completely crippled if you don’t register. The one time fee gives you free upgrades for life, removes a watermark, and enables a few other useful features like the ability to save at any point you like.
So like I said sixtyforce is a very solid app from a committed developer. if you’re into gaming it’s a no-brainer. Retro nostalgia!
If you can’t get enough console action, you might also want to check out Michael’s Nestopia Review.

That’s amazing! Where do I get the ROMs?
Keep in mind that in the latest version of sixtyforce, you need to be registered for the app to save at all (not just freeze states).
It’s 100% worth registering though.
Ahh my Golden Eye memories are coming back
Did you get this from my comment about Nestopia?
I can’t wait until I get my new iMac when I can play these games at full speed!
My favorite game isn’t even compatable with it, I’ll pass.
@ Joseph: I had actually written most of it when I read your comment but was glad to come across a fellow user.
@ Andre: what is your favourite game? Not that there’s anything I can do about it, just curious.
A pretty good game but hard to find for N64 is Ogre Battle.
@Nick: Mario Kart 64. I actually see it listed there now, though Mario Kart 64 doesn’t seem to work perfectly, so I’ll still pass.
” A Whole List” Thats the ”WHOLE LIST” In 7 years of work!?!?!?!
Atheist.
@Atheist: I think the list has not been updated for quite a while and is more of a trial and error.
If you aren’t sure if your favourite game works, it’s best just to try it out. You might get a pleasant surprise.
Where do i download the games?
ROMs:
http://www.coolrom.com/roms/n64/
for some reason my super smash bros wont save when i use this. is this normal? or is there some way i can fix this?
Does anybody know if Ogre Battle 64 works? I’m playing with an unregistered copy of sixtyforce and the game will freeze after about two or three minutes. Don’t know if it’s worth registering if the game doesn’t work.
Does anybody know what to do if your controller will not configure? I recently downloaded sixtyforce, and when I go to configure the controller, the Logitech Dual Action controller I have shows up on the list of controllers, but when I select it, the configure option remains grey. Can anyone help, I already paid money to be able to use a controller with my Mac. Thanks.
how do i ownload games?!?!?
those arent all the games and all of these games work better with your charger in
I downloaded Sixtyforce but when i click on it, it goes to the thing were i have to click “register” or “OK” and i click OK because i dont want to register. And then it just sits there at a purple screen with Gerrits name on it? im very new to this whole Emulator business but i would really like to use it. is there something i havnt done? Downloaded? And what are these ROMs that people keep talking about? Im Lost but Hopeful.
I’m have thing the same problem as glen, I have roms… and i just bought the serial number… but i still can’t get it to work… i had star fox working for thirty seconds.. then i backed out since i wanted to try to register it again… since then.. nothing.. i can’t register it.. i can’t get any of my roms to work.. all it does is sit at the purple screen.. please help me!!
Ah. The best console Nintendo ever did. I remember back in 1998, when I got my hands on Zelda: Ocarina of Time and subsequently spent a whole week of playing, catching only 3 hours a sleep a night, until I completed it. It was great, being 14. But I digress. Think I might want to look into this.
coolrom didnt let me download it was blocked so is there another website
anyone know where to get master quest
To get rid of your purple screen, Glen and friends, you need to go to a site and download ROMS.
Basically, Sixty Force is like the actual N64, and your putting it on with no game in the system. Try going to a site like http://www.dohgames.com/roms/list/n64/A/1.
From here you can download many good N64 games. INCLUDING OGRE BATTLE 64 for those who asked, but I don’t know how well it works.
I’m having a similar problem to scott. My keboard refuses to configure. If anyone has advice on how to fix this, it would be greatly appreciated.
ok ok ok, so i get it. But i just got a ROM and i click on it and then it says something about no default application, so i click choose application but it wont let me choose the sixtyforce application!! WTF??
allright. So some games work, sorta. I get them to open sixty force but then my comp just starts to buzz softly at a black screen. Nothing.

I think the people with Resident Evil 2 should
go to prefrences and try Memory Expansion pack. The game uses
that I belive…
I cant get any of the ROMs to Work. I downloaded sixtyforce, the ROM files for Mario64 and Starfox 64, started it up and … the program just crashes. I cant play any of them! can someone help me?
im trying to open a game but it coles when it is loading what should i do
@I HATE SIXTYFORCE! on May 20th, 2009 2:55 pm: I suggest placing all your ROMs into a folder, then placing that folder in the spot beside your recycle bin it will create a stack. Then, once you have Sixtyforce open – click on your ‘stack’ and your list of ROMs will show up. Double click on a game and your in!
Some of the replies here make me seriously shake me head. Installing emulators and ROMs is not that complicated people.
I just found out about this great program yesterday.
For those having troubles with the keyboard, just go to “tattiebogle.net” and download the latest drivers. Assuming you’re using an Xbox 360 wired controller. It works just great for me.
The only one complaint is the sound in Starfox is way off.
SM64 is perfect. Though Starfox is way off. Maybe that’s something that’ll be cleared up once purchase a serial for it.
I can’t figure out the controls…I only know that Enter is Start.
how do i register for supersmash bros
Hey!!!
i’m using sixty force in my macbook, but i can’t open games like mario tennis and donkey kong 64.
does any have the same problem?
greetings
I have a Logitech Dual Action controller that is “visible” when I go into the “configure contorllers” window, but the “configure” button remains ‘gray’ and I cannot click it… does anybody know how to fix this?? Thanks.
Heres how to get sixty force working on your mac.
1. Go to sixtyforce.com and download the “trial version” of sixtyforce0.9.2. NOTE: idk why they call this a trial, it works for everything except for saving.
2. Go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pl3jmAvNVw&feature=related and follow the instructions on how to register the sixtyforce so that it will save.
3. Go to doperoms.com and search for any of the nintendo64 roms there, all of them are compatible with mac.
Troubles i have myself:
Most of the games from doperoms and various other sites have worked for me, but some dont, and the ones that dont have the same problems, which leads me to believe they are all getting them from one source. Anyways, the roms that have not worked for me are: Doom 64, Star Wars Episode 1 Pod Racer, Mario Party 3, and 1080 Snowboarding.
i need mario cart 64 rom for thus emulator if you can send me a link
my only problem is paper mario doesnt save
im trying to play resident evil 2 but its not working PLZ HELP!!!
i just got a xbox 360 wired controller and cant get it to work on sixtyforce and snes9x and i already downloaded the driver for the controller… does anyone know how to get it to work on the emulator???
Sixtyforce is good, but Project64 [totally free] under Wine [also totally free] or CrossOver [payware] is much better.
I think you can solve the black screen by opening the graphics preferences. I didn’t even change them, just opened the box while the game was running black screen and it started working.
Resident evil 2 still doesnt work… If anybody has an answer please respond to me!
i dont know where to get ROM’s for sixtyforce that WORK.
i have gone to CoolROM.com which is usually good but all my favourite games like Banjo Tooie, Donkey Kong 64 and Mario Tennis are not working at all.
is there anything i can do to fix it?
or
is there a better website to use to get the games i wan’t to work.
Vimmslair is an amazing site for N64 roms. It has all of them (except a copy of RE2 that actually works), and its very easy to use.

Are you kids all 12?
Jesus christ!
For games you cant play like DK64 and RE2 and others, ITS NOT THE DAMN ROMS!
The roms work 100% fine, its just that SixtyForce is not compatible with some games.
If your still a dumbass, please look at this list of non-compatible games.
http://www.sixtyforce.com/compatibility/
IF YOU ARE TOO DUMB TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO PLAY A ROM
It is as easy as clicking it twice.
How the hell can you not figure that out? Are you infants?
As for Alize (who seems to be around 4 years old)
SEARCH IT IN GOOGLE DUMBASS!
I downloaded sixteyforce and got everything figured out on my own in one day!
Unless all of you have mental disorders or autism, I suggest you act more like your age.
Hey smart kid if you say its the application thats the problem then how come when i tried to play res2 it didnt work even when i know the application is just fine try explaining that to me and i might listen to you but until then shut up and be quite
i got res2 to work but it runs really slow and really wasn’t worth the hassle of getting it to play
I bought a mayflash adapter and used an original n64 controller, it shows up on configure controllers but it wont let me configure it. I cant hit any keys they dont work. When I hit a button on the controller that doesnt work.
you can get N64 game in (http://www.coolrom.com ) there is many game of Nintendo 64. you can download this game for free. common playing this game until your brain blown up!! hag…hag..hag…
Many of the sixtyforce games dont work but there is many others that do work and are fun at the same time like starfox 64 and quest 64
I cant figure out the controls for orcarina of time
I’ve tried the 0.95 beta, And the screen just stays black. The frame rate shows 0.0 per second, but the audio is just fine. The ROM I’ve tried is Majora’s Mask, which was the reason for me downloading the emulator at all. Any ideas?
hey mat try fiddling with the graphics configuration settings it worked for me. i got the visuals and the audio all working great EXCEPT! when ever i press start and bring up the menu the graphics freeze after a few seconds. i can press start and resume playing but its pointless with a non functioning menu. if you’ve figured out how to run Majoras mask on your mac with ought huge problems like this id love to know what ya did thx.
