StickyWindows: Killer App for Slobs?
My real life desktop is often littered with papers, pieces of hardware and half chewed Cadbury bars. Not surprisingly my OS X desktop is no different, and I often find myself shrieking out loud as I bump around finding the window I need. Enter Sticky Windows.
I don’t often take kindly to apps that want to integrate into key elements of my shell, but this stuff is Gonzo juice for heavy multitaskers like me.
In a nutshell StickyWindows allows you to minimize your windows into tabs that you can slap against the edge of your desktop. Once shrunk you can then move these tabs around however you wish. Need to close a tab? Simply drag it near the middle of the screen, and poof it vanishes. Also incredibly handy for firing images into Photoshop, full drag and drop is supported.

I don’t know if you’re putting this together yet or not, but since I started using SW yesterday, I am completely sold on its usefulness. I really cannot image going back to the clutter. Version 2.0 was just released on April 6th. Updated features include:
- Tabs Types: “Manual” or “Automatic”
- Tabs support drag & drop of files
- Completely new style and new visual effects to provide better use experience
- Completely new code base, more reliable and faster than version 1.x
- Universal App: works with Intel & PPC Macs
Donelleschi has a Quicktime demo video of the app for you to chew on to see if it’s right for you. StickyWindows is shareware and retails for $14.95 – qrab a copy and I bet you get stuck on it too.

I dont really need this but its a cool idea.
For me, hiding applications does the same thing. Most of the time, I go to the App’s menu and select Hide others to hide all the other windows. When I want them back, I just click that icon in the dock. I can see where this would be useful, though. Especially with finder windows, I guess.
Yea, I agree with Pierre, hiding my stuff in the dock rather than having tabs around the screen makes my desktop much tidier.
great coverage, Miles. I tried the previous version last year and it did not run well on intel mac despite UB. the new features are definitely great. I am buying it. Thanks for letting the world knows about this great app.
is there any way to disable its pink blinking? almost hate it

For the “clean desktop” I prefer something like Think or Desktopple.
I use Witch for the “drag and drop” stuff….. or even overflow.
Great idea for a single app, though!
Very interesting, seems similar to the concept of Pop-up Windows in the Finder back in Mac OS 9. I used that old feature quite a bit to organize my workflow and always have quick access to my Inbox (downloads). These people may very well get some money from me today. . .
