KPsaver: Pranks are Fun
I just came across this little gem of a screensaver that basically emulates what a kernel panic looks like. For those that don’t know, a kernel panic is the worst type of software crash your Mac can have. If you don’t know what it is, be glad you don’t know.
I haven’t seen a kernel panic in quite some time so I don’t know how the screensaver compares to the real thing. From what I remember it looks pretty accurate. To see it in action, the link above has a video and it looks very convincing to me.
My favourite thing about KPsaver is that when you look at it in the System Preference pane, all you see is an innocent looking animation.
There’s not really much more to be said about this but I can see a few people having a bit of fun with it.

it’s exactly the same as a real kp
I get those every once and a while, any ideas why?
@Jack Cory: No, it’s not exactly the same. With a real kernel panic, iTunes doesn’t fade out. It just stops.
Anyways, thanks MacApper for posting the same bullshit that’s on every other mac site.
@Steve – overly anxious kernels?
I get about 2 a year. I think they’re the OS X analogue to the Win BSoD – only Protected Mode generally protects your disk’s data. Instead of crashing like WIndows, OS X senses that it will crash, and shuts down before you do any real harm. A bit of the RAM info might come back, but open docs and the like are often lost. But I think the windows I had open before the panic reopen after a restart. Sometimes.
@Andre: I see the last three posts on your blog are about the iPhone, the Wii and AppleTV. Let’s not be hypocritical.
Well i got a couple one day then a week later i got one, then not for over a month and I recently got one (or something like that).
@Nick Cotton: Ouch, burn.
KPsaver is awesome, and uh I’ve gotten kernel panics on both of my machines in the last week. Pissin’ me off.
I’ve had my 12″ Powerbook for 18 months and have yet to have a KP. Oh, and I use it heavily, not just web surfing.
