I get about 2 a year. I think they're the OS X analogue to the Win BSoD - only Protected Mode generally protects your disk's data. Instead of crashing like WIndows, OS X senses that it <i>will crash<i>, and shuts down before you do any real harm. A bit of the RAM info might come back, but open docs and the like are often lost.
