I get about 2 a year.  I think they&#039;re the OS X analogue to the Win BSoD - only Protected Mode generally protects your disk&#039;s data.  Instead of crashing like WIndows, OS X senses that it &lt;i&gt;will crash&lt;i&gt;, and shuts down before you do any real harm.  A bit of the RAM info might come back, but open docs and the like are often lost.  But I think the windows I had open before the panic reopen after a restart.  Sometimes.</description>
