Transmit, a Man’s FTP Client

transmit

There are quite a few FTP clients out there, but one stands out the most in my mind and that’s, Transmit. It’s the best ftp client I’ve ever used. When I started to work at a local ISP I was in a hurry to find a great client that could do SFTP. I looked around and found a few, but they didn’t have exactly what I was looking for. Then I saw Transmit and I knew I had found my tool.

The best feature in my mind would have to be the ability to use drag and drop. You can drag to the dock icon, download the dashboard widget, and even install the plugin for Quicksilver. Even if you aren’t connected to a server and you perform the drag and drop action, it uploads it to your most recent server you were connected to. Connection times are fast along with transferring of files to and from different servers. During my use of Transmit, I have yet to find any flaws. One other thing is that you can use whatever text editor you want when viewing remote files - BBEdit, TexMate, TextEdit, it doesn’t matter.

Transmit in action

I use Transmit on a day to day basis for uploading php files and accessing my work’s servers. There are just so many features implemented into this one client. The only thing I don’t like about Transmit is it’s not free, but with everything that it can do and how well it’s made, the $30 price tag is not too bad.

You can download Transmit here.

If you’re broke you can get Fugu here, which is a nice replacement to Transmit.

I use Yummy FTP, and haven’t looked back. It’s fast and reliable — I liked it better than Transmit.

A truely great app. Love the drag-and-drop and the ability to quickly edit remote files. Really speeds up my workflow.

Will definitely be buying it once the trial period is over.

Transmit and Yummy are the two best ftp clients on the mac, but I ended up choosing Transmit after demoing both for a while. I love live editing in both.

Transmit is feature rich and easy to use. If you are moving multiple file, though, Yummy is noticably faster and is also feature rich. Ain’t it great to have to choose between two excellent apps?

Transmit plays very nice indeed … if it connects to mainstream platforms. But if you want filetransfer connectivity to a more proprietary box, like a Tandem NonStop Server, then there is only one player in town: YummyFTP.
FTP clients like Transmit, CaptainFTP, CyberDuck … will al fail miserably and end up with ugly crashes or blocking threads. In such environment YummyFTP is the only kid in town.

Worst, most mind-numbingly irrelevant headline I’ve seen in a long time.
