Xtorrent 1.0v40 Released with a Bounty of New Features, and More to Come

Xtorrent LogoDave Watanabe has just announced the v40 update to his popular torrent client Xtorrent, including hints at a bundle of features to be released down the road. As of this version, Xtorrent Pro includes support for per-torrent bandwidth limits and the Azureus/utorrent compatible peer exchange - which should apparently help increase some transfer speeds.

Watanabe has also announced a bounty of features to be released in future versions: selective file downloading, encryption, and torrentcast auto-downloading (I’d like to point out Xtorrent can already subscribe to RSS feeds, just not auto-download yet). These featured were announced on the basis of absolutely on track for future releases, so we’ll just have to wait.

What he neglects to mention is that those features are completely dependent on Transmission development as far as he is concerned.

I’m sticking with Azureus myself. I understand that he’s doing some UI development on his apps, but he’s wrapping his UI around open source software and charging an arm and a leg for them. That bugs the heck out of me, especially when I consider the fact that the primary uses for Acquisition and XTorrent is copyright violation. Sticks in my craw, you might say, to pay for tools to break the law.

I agree with Bruce and previous posters. It’s a nice app, I used it while it was Beta but I think it’s pretty wack charging for a torrent client.

The new features that Dave W has announced are on the way are all things I’d love in Transmission - now my client of choice.

Actually, I really wish the Azureus devs would accept that their app needs a clean slate and got some decent UI designers on board.

Yeah, Azureus could definitely use a facelift, but it’s a Java app, so there’s only so much you can do with it. I’d love to see a pure cocoa port (if such a thing is possible, that is) because it is by far the best torrent app I’ve used.

Still don’t get why no one undedrstands that basicly the only thing missing from allmost ALL Mac torrent clients is selective file downloading. I won’t be switching from Azuerus until there’s a decent client with selective file downloading!
