HandBrake 0.8.5b1 Released

HandBrake logoA while ago, we did an exclusive report about the development fork of the DVD ripping/encoding app HandBrake forking back into the original codebase. At the time, this app was known as MediaFork, and we reported that the next version of the app would soon return under the original HandBrake name. That time is now.

The dev team at HandBrake have packed a slew of new features into this beta release, including surround sound and AppleTV support, among many others. Along with these fancy new features come a ton of minor tweaks to make the app just that much better. The devs also report that we should expect to see an updated 0.8.5b2 version shortly with even more features.

HandBrake is available for OS X, Linux, and Windows. The servers are getting slammed right now, but keep checking back at the spiffy new HandBrake site to get the latest version.

Obligatory reminder that there is a replacement icon for Handbrake.

The new version is very nice. I like the presets. Before I was always confused about the proper bitrate, but now I can just click and everything’s set for me. I also like the chapter stops. Very handy for movies. I’ll have to play around with it a bit more to find a good, friendly bitrate to balance quality with space savings (a test encode of a single 22 minute episode of Samurai Jack weighs 400mb using the HB-AppleTV preset-ouch!) but it looks good so far.
