Chax: What iChat Always Needed
If you’re like me you probably use iChat for all your chatting needs, although sometimes it doesn’t fulfill all of those needs. With iChat there are a few features missing that you probably wish were there. Well this can all be taken care of, thanks to Chax.
From their site, Chax is “a collection of minor modifications and additions that make using Apple’s iChat more enjoyable.” Below are a few things that Chax does to make your iChat experience more enjoyable.
Tabbed Chats: Whenever I am on IM, I am bound to talk to many people at a time. Without tabbed chats, managing and keeping track of those windows is hard. What tabbed chats does is it allows you to have all your chats in one window, and a tab bar at the bottom (much like Safari’s), that allows you to switch and close them easily.

Show Animated User Icons: While this may not be the biggest thing in the world, it is somewhat important to me. Back in my Windows days, whenever people told me to check out their new animated icon, I could. But, until I got Chax, I couldn’t on my Mac. Chax allows you to show the buddies animated user icons, either in the Buddy List or Buddy Info.
Log Viewer: Another important thing, to me, is keeping track of what I said and when. While iChat does this already, the organization system is pretty lacking. With Chax and its Log Viewer, you can search through all your old chats for a topic, and see what comes up. It also organizes them by username, and from there, date.
I encourage you to check out Chax as there are many other features listed, plus it’s 100% free, though it never hurts to donate.

I long for the day these features come standard in iChat… well until then, there’s Chax.
True, True. Some of these features may be added in Leapord, but I’m not sure. Leapord is going to be nice, but It’s going to be a while.
I love Chax for everything except the log viewer, I find it lacking and that’s why I’ve been a huge advocate for Logorrhea – does a much better job at keeping your logs
.
adium is way better if you don’t do a lot of video chat, IMO.
