I do fully agree to GrandPerspective. Even when I am thinking my drive is quite clean, I find something new to kill.

Glad you liked that Greg. I didn't know it was reviewed before...I would have mentioned that. This article inspired me to use it last night, my only complaint (small one) is that it doesn't let you select multiple files to delete in it's finder window. Not a big deal but I wanted to trash about 10 movies and had to do it one by one.

Keep the great articles coming! I'm telling all my buddies about the site!

Great stuff and useful article!!!

I'm in the process of replacing my hard drive and reconfiguring Bootcamp in the process and I used at least of the products you mentioned in solid detail.

Excellent work!

Very informative Greg! This inspired me to go out tomorrow to buy the Lacie 1TB firewire 800 drive I have had my eye on. What are some of you others using for external storage/archiving? With today's cheap prices on GB's it seems almost pointless to have to delete anything.

Forget OmniDiskSweeper....nothing too special there plus it costs $.
WhatSize is a fantastic app that is updated, works quickly across any drives you may have connected and most importantly...has the delete key enabled!
Fantastic.

ahh, no way to edit my post, but thought I'd also state some obvious things I'm sure most of the other mac users know :P I also like monolingual and xslimmer to get rid of a lot of extra space too, I think I've saved a few gigs from my comp running both.

I've tried to look at grandperspective before, but never downloaded it, but I'm gonna try it now. But what I didn't see mentioned in the article (but was mentioned in the you might also be interested in" links) is whatsize, I love that program.

This is a very good article covering a lot of ground. GrandPerspective is a fantastic piece of software. I find new things to delete every time I run it, and it helped me free up space on an old iBook that only had a 15GB to begin with (now I have 10GB free space on it!) For backup, I plug in an external drive every once in a while, and just drag over my home folder and a few others to it. With Leopard and Time Machine I may develop a more rigorous backup routine. And there's always the problem of having more to back up than will fit on your external drive...
