VoodooPad: A Wiki for Your Mind

VoodooPadWith the wealth of information management programs available on the OS X platform it can be hard to find one that fits your needs. Many apps are very specific or force you to put your information into a certain format. However, VoodooPad by Flying Meat, solves this problem. VoodooPad is basically a wiki for your brain. Most people are familiar with what a wiki is through the popular encyclopedia Wikipedia.

VoodooPad puts no constraints on how, what, and where you store your data, as it provides an open-ended environment to organize your thoughts. As you type in a phrase like MacApper or NewPage, VoodooPad automatically sees this as a potential link to a new page. If you click on the phrase, a new page is created and you have a new page and a link to it. Now, anytime you type that phrase, it automatically becomes a link. In addition to just typing or copying and pasting, you can import/drag-and-drop images, files, URLs, applications – basically anything you can see on your computer can be put in a VoodooPad document.

The sketch feature is very useful, allowing you to draw right on your pages. This makes it easy to make flowcharts, diagrams, etc. The VoodooPad PDF service is also very useful. The service shows up in your print dialouge box under the PDF section. This allows you to save anything that can be printed as a PDF, and is then automatically imported directly into VoodooPad.

VoodooPad also allows you to encrypt just a few pages or the whole file (pro version only) as well as use script plugins. It also integrates well with AppleScript.

The best part of VoodooPad for me is the excellent search functionality. Many programs claim they have a good search feature, but I find many to be lacking. VoodooPad searches all pages and content in your whole document and returns a ranked list of pages. It does a great job ranking the pages and I usually find what I want within the first few results.

VoodooPad

After living with VoodooPad for a week, I can say that it is by far the best information management program I have ever used. You can try it out for free either as a trial or a “Lite” version. A pro version is also available which adds a few extra features. It is worth every penny, and retails for $29.95. VoodooPad is available from Flying Meat.

I use this(the lite version) for my to do list and to write down the zillions of thoughts I have going on in my head everday. Good App!

I’ve started using the lite version myself to work on world building for a series of stories I’m writing. It works very well.
