You should try Pixelmator when it arrives in a couple of months. The beta testing is in August and it should be completed in 2-3 months (give or take). Many have called it “the missing mac-only photo editor”. It debuted at this year’s WWDC in San Francisco during the Delicious party. PM is a Photoshop clone (improvement) like none other….seemingly better than Chocoflop and will likely replace Photoshop for many people using macs.

Don’t forget Pixen (another freebie): http://opensword.org/Pixen/. Although it’s more geared towards sprites and animation, it’s probably closer than Seashore for MS-Paint refugees.

I have always liked Chocoflop (http://www.chocoflop.com). While it is not free, donation-ware I think, it is not a lot of money and is a suitable app for basic photo editing. I can’t wait for Pixelmator (http://pixelmator.com/) though; I hope it will be a Photoshop killer. Seriously.

Great article. I’ve had more than one switcher asking me for a MSPaint replacement. Another decent replacement is TuxPaint. It’s designed for kids (really ugly), but it’s easy to use and has the basic tools. Just wish it had been wrapped in Cocoa instead.
