iPhone Video Review

iPhone ReviewI’m sure most of you have had a chance to play with or at least coddle an iPhone this weekend. If not you are totally missing out. There are some great forum threads going around and even some more well known pundits offering their first impressions. Now some of the guys at MacApper have procured iPhones but I was asked to throw together a usability and real world video review for the unit. I hope it covers some bases and gripes not covered elsewhere, and would love to hear some comments from some of the 250,000 – 525,000 of you who fanboy’ed out, and are the first on your own block to own one.

Watch for the video after the jump and don’t forget to subscribe to MacApper’s famous full page feeds to always be in the loop for everything Mac.

I actually just saw the iphone for the first time today on my lunch break. Some guy had one, he looked/sounded just as I imagined most iphone buyers would.

“i wanted the 8gb but they sold out just before I got there. I figure this one is probably a little lighter anyways”

Who is the 15-yr-old who did this review? He thinks safari is the worst app on the iphone???? That’s the exact opposite opinion of most reviews I’ve seen.

I’m the 15 year old who did this review. I do think safari is the worst app on the iPhone, and I explained why. What do you think?

As an iPhone user myself, I believe that safari is one of the best widgets on the iPhone. I get to check the NY Times while i’m waiting for the bus, and check out google video. I really like the way multi-touch works while browsing.

Safari on my phone works fast and is the best browser on a phone that i have ever used. I do not agree with the the statements that you have made.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Like I said, I am a big fan of all the software on the iPhone. Safari is the one app that I think needs some improvement however. It is definitely usable, but at times, it does lag up, and waiting for the rendering can become annoying at times, and navigating around the page does get tedious after long periods of time.

I also am aggrivated by lack of support of flash and java. Apple claims iPhone safari sports the ‘real’ internet, but the real internet has flash and java. I am not claiming iPhone safari is worse than any other phone browser. All I am saying is if Apple is going to try to compare it to browsers on actual computers, it better be a bit quicker, and have a bit better compatibility.

@#5: While I appreciate your well-punctuated opinion, I am not attempting to be pessimistic towards the iPhone. From the review, “The software on the iPhone is utterly brilliant.” When I test the phone, I use it at a very quick speed to test the use for power users, and when you use it quickly, it does lag up. If you actually think your iPhone is faster than the one I tested, I would be fine with trading.

Great review! I would say that this video was the most detailed review I have seen so far. Thanks.

I have heard (nytimes etc..) that safari is a problem. Because edge is slow and it is rendering full pages it takes around 2 mins to load a site like yahoo.com in most areas.

Personally, I think mail is the weakest application on the iPhone. No SSL support? No alternate ports?

I’ve got to say Safari is one of my favorite parts of the iPhone. Sure, it doesn’t beat Safari on my Macbook but it blows away any other phone browser. If you have used a web browser on any other mobile phone, you will be blown away by Safari on the iPhone. So far I’m really pleased with my iPhone purchase. Sure, it’s not the “perfect” device but it’s the closest thing to it that I’ve seen. When they have full blown Exchange support (ala Blackberry) it will be icing on the cake.
