MacTracker: Specifications at Your Fingertips
Ever been in a situation where you needed to know the specs of an old Apple machine? Or even your current machine? MacTracker is a slick database of Apple equipment dating back to the very first Mac.
The amount of detail in the specification of each machine is amazing. Details like dimensions, internal product code-names, release dates, the OS it shipped with, expansion ports, RAM capacity and even a blurb on it’s original price plus images of the machine are included.
It even goes so far as to provide a startup chime for every machine Apple has ever made and the death chimes for those that had it (the Mac II is my favourite). MacTracker also contains a Smart Folder-like option, where you can specify criteria for a search, e.g. all models with a 68000 CPU.
It’s saved me several times when I needed to know a specific type of RAM an older Mac uses. Plus, it’s also fun to reminisce about old machines we’ve used. MacTracker also contains detailed information on obscure items, like the Apple Quicktake camera, the Apple printer and scanner range, as well as the Newton PDAs.

MacTracker is regularly updated when new stuff comes out, and even has a feature to report potential mistakes or the accuracy of the info. Al in all it’s a brilliant app which showcases the devotion of Mac users to their platform.
Head on over to the MacTracker website and download it for free. There’s even a version for your iPod – super handy if you’re out in the field and need Mac specs quickly.

The nostalgia value alone of this tool is amazing and as a tech in an Apple store it is something we all use regularly. The most comprehensive and resource rich compendium of mac/apple products in existence. Nice review.
