Agreed, I used VLC for a while too, but Perian does a great job.

This app together with Flip4Mac makes QuickTime complete. I used to watch my videos in VLC all the time, but the interface was just terrible…

This may not be as common or important to English-speaking users (or for thoese that see everything dubbed into their language) but one of the best improvements of this version of Perian is support for subtitles in video files.

This is a biggie for a lot of people out there, and a major selling (downloading?) point for it.
