Rock on with GarageBand Jam Packs

Jam PackEven if you cannot play a musical instrument, or tell the difference between a piccolo and a flute, Garageband still makes music creation a walk in the park. For novices, Apple provides a wide range of “loops” that you can choose from.

These loops are essentially a short portion of music that has been professionally recorded. To create a song simply involves bolting a couple of loops from several different instruments together. You can then record your singing over it to produce a masterpiece.

Garageband comes with a limited number of these loops, so any budding musicians out there would certainly want to increase his/her collection. Some artists release their own loops, allowing fans to remix their music. Fortunately, Apple also sells extra royalty-free loops. These are contained in “Jam Packs“, which usually feature a certain theme.

Earlier today, Apple quietly introduced yet another Jam Pack. Dubbed “Voices“, this new pack features a lot of singing that you can add to your creations. For those who were expecting the likes of John Mayer, you’ll be disappointed. This pack is filled with variations from choirs, bands, singers and more. But if Voices doesn’t necessarily float your boat, there are other choices out there too.

Fancy some rhythm? The “Rhythm Section” provides all sorts of drums/cymbals/percussion instruments that make up a drum kit. If you want fine control over the drum set, this pack is a must have. Hip-hop, Techno and new-age fans might want to check out “Remix Tools”. There are tons of original synth sounds and sound effects.

For those who appreciate classical and symphonic music, Apple’s got you covered as well. The “Symphony Orchestra” pack allows you to build your own orchestra, all the way from string to brass and woodwind instruments. Finally, if you’re after something more exotic, the “World Music” pack will fit the bill nicely. Featuring ethnic music and other local woodwind instruments, this is certainly worth looking at.
