Where Do You Get Your Icons?

My HD iconOne of the best things about OS X is that it is easy to customize. Everything from you desktop picture to the skin of an application can be changed to suit your liking if you have the right tools. One of my favorite was to change my Mac’s overall appearance is changing icons.

The reason that I like changing my Mac’s icons is that it gives my Mac a “personality.” With the right icons, you can change the whole look of your system, and make it more tailored toward you. The only problem I find with icons, is finding ones that “feel right” for me.

InterfaceLift Icon page

There is such a large magnitude of icons available, that I find it hard sometimes to find ones that I like. When you change an icon, whether it be a system icon or an application icon, you are going to have to look at that little picture every time you use it. That’s why you should try and find icons that you truly like.

The reason I wrote this post is that I want to know where you guys get your icons. So far, I have only really taken a hard look through InterfaceLift and FastIcon’s freeware section. I would really like to get into modding my system’s icons a little more.

Do you have any screenshots of your icons? Where are your favorite places to get icons? Do you have any specific sets that you like? Discuss this here in the comments, or in this thread in the forum.

I get most of my icons from InterfaceLIFT. They have a large selection that’s free.

I think we are missing the obvious here: Forklift is not applescriptable. Easy scripting is essential if they want to compete with the Finder, whose lecacy scripting support allows nearly everything it does to be recorded into a script without writing a line of code.

    Applescript, applescript, applescript.

I don’t use custom icons like I used to. Much of the charm of icons was lost when they went from 32×32 to 128×128. BUT as it happens, I just recently downloaded some icons from the Icon Factory that I’m using for my external drives. They’re all from the Agua collection. They’re clean and spare and yes, charming.

InterfaceLIFT does it for me, except now that Leopard has arrived, I don’t feel the need to adjust icons quite yet. It’ll take another month or two for me.
