Meteo: Weather in Your Menu Bar
Meteo is a small app that sits in your ever-more-crowded menu bar and tells you the current weather in your location (or anywhere, I suppose). There are many ways to find out the weather: you can use the Weather Dashboard Widget, use your iPhone (you do have an iPhone right?), go to the National Weather Service webpage, actually look out a window or you can use Meteo.
I have mine set to display my current temperature and a small icon with current conditions in the menubar and when I click on it, a drop-down menu gives me more info about current conditions (windspeed/direction, humidity, dewpoint, barometric pressure) and a 3-day forecast. As an added bonus, when selecting a city name in the drop-down menu, you will be whisked to the Weather.com page for your city. Very useful. You can have multiple cities shown in the menu or cycled with city-name in the menubar.

Meteo isn’t a resource hog, using 0% CPU and 29MB of real memory (I remember when the entire OS ran in a tenth of that) on my MacBook Pro. Meteo is free and open source and available on SourceForge.

This app was done months ago. You guys better get your acts together.
Yes, it was included in the March 31, 2007 showdown of weather apps, but this piece gives much more detail (and valuable screenshots) of how Meteo works. I learned about WeatherDock from that 3/31 piece, and have been an enthusiastic user of it since, and have recommended it to a few other people who also love it. But it’s nice to see a detailed story about how a competing product works without having to install it myself.
Looks like a pretty cool app, however I prefer the dashboard widget as it only uses 10MB of real memory.
The widget is taking 23.69mb of real memory on my system. I just started the dashboard, too, so it hasn’t been running for hours. Weatherdock, on the other hand, is using 9.64mb of real memory. Odd.
I’ll definitely check out Meteo at some point. I love Weatherdock, but that doesn’t make it the best.
Duplicate. As Dob said, already posted in the weather review. Lame.
