Rant: Hey Apple, where is my iPod Touch?
It seems like the last 12 months have involved a lot of waiting for technology. I waited almost all night with hundreds of others in -20°C winter cold for a Nintendo Wii. Loads of us (well not me actually) waited in long lines to get an iPhone [Ed: I did! 4 hours!]. Every time I’ve failed to pre-order some cool gadget, I’ve ended up waiting and regretting it. So when the long rumored iPhone-without-the-phone iPod touch was announced, I jumped on the bandwagon and ordered one from store.apple.com straightaway.
To my surprise and dissatisfaction though, while my Delivery Status widget still read that I had 20 days until I receive my little piece of technological joy, I started reading about people all across the states finding the iPod Touch in Apple Retail Stores!. I’m not one to get jealous or bitter, but why are all these people finding iPods in stores, while us “hardcore order seconds after the keynote” saps still aren’t set to receive our orders until early October?
What do all of you think? Am I just being a bit too sensitive or is anyone else a bit irked about having to wait weeks for what many of us could have probably purchase at our local Apple Store?

I was also in the same boat. My delivery status widget also said 20 days, but all of a sudden yesterday, it said shipped. It is supposed to arrive Friday. I’m in Philadelphia.
I live in UK and I need to wait til 2nd October as well. I rather like to wait than recieve screen failured iPoT.
hmmm my widget says it ships by the 28th of September and arrives by august 10th :S
I’m in Indonesia and God knows how long it will be before iPod touch reach Indonesia.

It’s definetely a Canadian Thing. While I hate that apple does this, not providing products AT ALL to us, even though we are so close to the US, take TV Shows, Movies, iPhones, for a few examples, I also hate that they are only shipping them early to Apple Retail Stores in the US. Come on Apple, Get to know us (Canada)
I was actually thinking, why can’t i get the old iPod nano, you know … without touchscreen … looks more appealing to me. Guess I’ll have to go to the stores and hunt it down, before it disappears entirely.
My local Apple store is receiving iPod touches in drips and drabs. They got seven in yesterday and sold out in minutes. If you call the store to ask, they tell you that, if you call after shipment arrives (”lunchtime”) and they have one then they can hold it for you until the end of the day.
I was going to do the same thing you did, pre-order it on the Apple Store online the minute it was released, but I decided to wait. I was only really waiting a few days till I actually had the money to buy it with the preorder, and then i heard that some stores had it, so that night after class i called my local apple store, and they had some, and i went to pick one up.
They aren’t on display, you have to ask for them, but i do agree, why ship it 3 weeks after it’s on sale?
Unless all these apple stores selling them are breaking some rules somewhere (which i doubt).
I’m in the UK, and bizarrely, the time from shipping to arrival has just increased on my order from 4 days to 7 days. It’s supposed to arrive October 5th.
Mine also decided to ship yesterday, and it’s supposedly delivering on Friday.
That being said, the delivery widget is a neat thing, so thanks for mentioning it.
Frankly, I pre-ordered mine at Future Shop online and my ship date is even later (Oct 12) and with some of the production glitches in the first batch that has hit the stores, I’m more than happy to wait a few more weeks to get one that doesn’t have those problems (particularly with the inconsistencies with the anti-reflective coating on the screens that causes the video problems).
I got my tracking confirmation yesterday. I ordered it from the online store and mine should be here no later than 4:30 on the 21st…so less than 2 days!
the fedex website won’t tell me when mine will ship.
I bought one the 13th in store, then exchanged it a few days ago for one with a better screen. Initially I was gonna order online but I figured it would take too long. Good luck recieving it.
