Rumor: iPhone to include IM and picture messaging soon?
I got an interesting text message on my iPhone this morning:
AT&T FREE Msg: Good News, your messaging package now includes text, picture & instant messages all for the same price of $19.99 per month. No action required
This strongly implies that I will be able to send picture and instant messages, which I can not do currently. Is this the precursor to the first significant software update for the iPhone? iPhone’s lack of IM and picture messaging are two of the most frequent complaints to Apple and AT&T.
UPDATE: A reader emails
Are you on pay-as-you-go (GoPhone) or contract? Over at this thread on Macrumors.com, somebody got the same message this morning. We were all ramped up the firmware update would be this afternoon. But most of us didn’t get the SMS. The original poster called in and ATT told him that it was a global change for GoPhone customers with data plans, didn’t apply to iPhone customers and was sent to some of them in error.
I am a GoPhone customer, but I also have the $19.99 text messaging plan, maybe you need both of those to get this message?
This could be a generic message, or it could be something more! Ahh rumors!

That’s exactly the same message that I’ve gotten several times over the last year on my current service. (i don’t have an iphone.) So, I’m not sure how well one can take this as an indicator.
Nooo! Don’t thwart my rumormongering!
Honestly, I’ve been looking for a reason to remove this blog from my Google Reader and this post seals the deal. I love how you put a huge digg button also like this is going to be some huge groundbreaking story.
This was a standard message sent out to all at&t subscribers to promote the new messaging package created to compete with other carriers. If this were a specific indicator for iPhone users, the package would have been priced with an even number for consistencies sake (existing users data = $20, $30, $40).

[...] Could this mean we can finally send pictures via MMS (multimedia message service) on the iPhone’s SMS messaging? If this happens, we’ll probably still be limited to 200 included messages, with the MMS messages counting the same as a text message. Sure would be nice to have text, instant messaging and picture-sending using the iPhone’s happy fun iChat-like client. The thing is, none of your intrepid GizEditors got a message like this. Sounds like a hiccup; we have our serious doubts, especially since this looks like the same message you see on the iPhone right after you fire it up for the first time. Readers? [MacApper] [...]
@Fourbin: We’re sorry you feel that way.
I agree with Fourbin, Macapper used to be my favourite Mac rescource, but the value of the posted stories is getting less every day. What happened with all the freeware reviews? For rumours etc, tuaw excists. Don’t immitate. Innovate.
I vote for this being a general mesg to go phone accounts, not an iPhone update, (or useable on iPhone)
But, if I had not read this blog and its comments, I might have bought into the rumor.

well im a iphone guy and it sucks to have at&t cause they wont let you accept picture text cause at&t blocks it so they can make more money off us but if you have t mobile and a unlock iphone you can get all of that and video camra off the iphone so thats all i goota say
I have the iphone 3G and im still waiting for them to leak a date for the MMS update. That kinda irritated me when they announced the 3.0 software update and when you go to apple’s website to read on it, at the very bottom in small print it says, “coming late summer”. =(
Its here just uploaded it and sent and received picture text messages. Only for 3G and 3GS.
Directions on apples website.
