Boot Camp 1.2 Passes its Expiry Date

Boot Camp
Boot Camp, the amazing software that allows you to run Windows XP or other operating systems natively on your Mac has come to the end of its Beta period.

Users currently using Boot Camp Beta 1.2 or earlier will need to upgrade to version 1.4, if they wish to continue using the Beta after support for this version ended on September 30, 2007. So if you’re trying to create a new Boot Camp partition and it just isn’t working, now’s the time to upgrade to version 1.4.

Current users running version 1.3 or 1.4 will have until the release of Leopard to continue their Beta usage. The only way to continue using Boot Camp after this period is to upgrade to Leopard, which will include the final version. Not such a bad deal I guess, since we don’t know many Mac users who aren’t planning on upgrading. Can’t say the same for the latest versions of some other popular operating systems…

I wonder if when Leopard is released if the existing windows installations will also be made inaccessible through bootcamp 1.4 on Tiger. (I hope not!)

From what I understand your current Boot Camp partitions should still work, you just won’t be able to create any new ones. I guess we’ll find out…

I don’t see how Apple could manage to make your BC partition inaccessible after a certain date. There’d be a HUGE backlash, for one thing, plus the simple fact of the matter is they’d have no right. It’d be like holding your data for ransom.

I think Andrew has the right of it - you’ll still be able to access your BootCamp partition, you just won’t be able to create more.

Of course, you could always set your computer’s clock back and see what that gets you.

The existing partitions still work - you just can’t launch Boot Camp Assistant any more. There is a really simple work around - just set your Mac’s time to before Sep 30, 2007 - worked like a charm for me.
