myNotes: Note Taking Made Simple

myNotes IconThere seems to be tons of note-taking applications out there for the Mac these days, but one that has been under the radar is myNotes from Mishimo. Andrei Kozlov of Mishimo has made a simple, yet elegant application, which allows you to get down to business straight away, without all the usual hassle.

myNotes does have many nice little features, which do not get in the way when you are note-taking.

The section where you enter notes is just an empty box, no formatting tools to get in your way. There are, of course, formatting tools available, either from the taskbar or using the usual keyboard shortcuts. The product includes the standard searching and the ability to add web links into a note, however I am very keen on the iPod syncing which allows users to put all the notes onto their iPods. However, it is a shame that the iPod touch – the one which would be able to fully exploit this feature – currently lacks Notes.

Furthermore, it has the one key feature which every application should have, and that is auto-saving. While this approach has been welcomed in web-apps, it has yet to fully exploited on the desktop. Another great feature is the way myNotes prints out the notes. The software allows you to print notes with different styles, which is great if you have to organise notes for school. Even though you can not make your own styles, which is a shame, you are able to alter current styles with different fonts and colouring. Personally, I would like to see custom styles for print outs, which should be part of this product, and the ability to use these styles when saving them on the computer. These styles would look great in PDF format, and I really hope Mishimo considers this in a future update.

For such a small product, I was very surprised and happy to see that a lot of work had gone into making this application localised for users. Currently myNotes supports 9 languages, English, German, Italian, French, Spanish, Dutch, Portuguese, Korean and Traditional Chinese. If you are a student who requires a straightforward note-taking application then consider myNotes. myNotes is a shareware product, with a single license costing $19.95, yet you can make further savings when purchasing multiple licenses from here.

This app looks nice, but I have been using and prefer the features of NoteBook by Circus Ponies. There are however a number of these types of apps for the MAC available so trying them out to see which one works best for you is the obvious way to go.

Will myNotes synch with the iPhone and show up on the iPhone?
