iPhone & iPod Touch Jailbreak: Now Incredibly Simple
Steve Jobs’ announcement that he intends to release an SDK for the iPhone and iPod touch, seems to have shut up many critics. While the official software is not set to arrive until February, that doesn’t mean that you can’t have your apps in the meantime.
A new method of “jailbreaking” (enabling 3rd party software and other goodies) the iPhone and iPod touch was released by the iPhone dev team in the last couple of days. The procedure makes jailbreaking your iPhone or iPod touch as easy as just simply navigating to a website in the mobile version of the Safari web browser. Now that is easy!
Surf to jailbreakme.com on your Apple mobile device, read through the disclaimers, and select “Install AppSnapp”.
Let the application do it’s magical work and don’t touch it. Depending upon your internet connection, it could take around 5 minutes. Also, don’t worry if your Safari crashes – that happened to me too. Once it’s done, it will go back to the “Slide to Unlock” screen, and once you’re back in, you’ll see an Installer.app icon right on your main screen.
In addition to installing Installer, AppSnapp will patch the Springboard (Apple’s nomenclature for the home screen) to allow for future apps to automatically show up on the iPhone/iTouch’s main screen. In addition, if it’s an unlocked phone, it will automatically fix YouTube, and will activate inactive iPhones automatically, leaving already active iPhones alone.
The most ironic part of the whole procedure is the fact that it actually makes your iPhone or iPod touch more secure than it would have been had you not jailbroken it, due to the fact that it automatically patches the same security hole in Mobile Safari that was used to jailbreak it in the first place. Now there’s truly no reason not to jailbreak your iPhone or iPod touch because it’s simply that easy. UPDATE: According to some of the commenters, it looks like this works better over Wi-Fi than it does over en EDGE network. Also, Safari is supposed to crash, because that means that it’s exploited the security hole.

Didn’t work for me. Crashed my iPod Touch repeatedly, had to restore.
I waited all these years for the iPod Touch, such a great piece of hardware although I must admit that I miss the Newton terribly and I have the feeling that a third-party app installer will make the Touch feel much more like a Newton. Waiting until February 2008 for the official Apple version of a third-party application installer seems like nothing more than a speed bump. Yes, I’m an early adaptor. But in this case, I’m willing to wait. I don’t like the idea or the possibility that my Touch could get screwed up or my warranty voided. Yes, I’d love to have this kind of installer because I’d love my Touch to be even more functional than it is now. But I can wait. I’m having so much fun with it as is, February hardly seems that far away.
I have a brand new iPhone 1.1.1 and it doesn’t do anything. It starts to load the second website and then throws me back to the Main Menu. I even waited, and of course my phone times out after 1 minute, but it never installed.
OK, I connected to Wi-Fi instead of EDGE and it installed just fine, within a few seconds. Awesome.
Yes , Britonius is correct, try your home wi-fi and it installs beautifully..Im loving it…thanks jailbreak team

Im having real poroblems with this. I have 2 USA phones. 1st one worked fine – an easy process. No like u Michael, i go onto wifi and the iphone keeps reverting back to the emergency call menu whenever i attempt to download the jailbreak software – i’ve never even seen the menu…. Can anybody help?

this doesn’t work for me. When I do to install its just a white page in the top left corner. If you hav a prob go to ziphones blog, it jailbreak the touch/iphone in like 3 minutes!

With my iPhone i am able to get free internet at most any hot spot like Starbucks and major book stores.. very cool!! BTW Steve only eats raw food.. that is why he is so healthy..
