I gave up on iphoto long ago since it couldn't handle 10,000+ images on a LAN server (or Air Disk). I've been using Adobe Bridge as a stop gap (which is fast) while a decide between Lightroom or Aperture. Perhaps Photon is in the running now too. I’ll have to give this a spin.
