Mac Client for Eve Online, Trinity Cometh

Eve Online Trinity Coming! There is a school of thought, which considers Mac And Gaming, nothing but a paradox. Even if we don’t agree with this statement completely we have to admit there is some truth to it. However here at Macapper we like to be the bearer of good news, so let’s talk about the latest development in the Mac Gaming World (yes it does exist).

November 6 marks the release of the Mac Client for the online game EVE Online. For the uninitiated, EVE online is a multi-player online game, which has acquired almost a cult status among gamers all over. The new Mac Client has been christened “Trinity” and the patch shall be available online this Tuesday. The game is quite intense and consists of more than 5000 solar systems which the player can visit while honing their fighting skills. If combat doesn’t interest you then you can also indulge in activities like mining, manufacturing and trade. Sound fun?

Of course till now Mac Users have been able to run the game via Boot Camp, but not all of us are privy to Intel goodness, and this release will be appreciated by the Windows antagonists.

EVE currently costs €14,95 / $14.95 a month and one can try it for free by scouting 14-day trial invitations from their friends. You can also register a new trial account and decide if you want to be part of the science fiction space setting.

Do let us know what you think about this new Mac Client or the game in general. Also are you of the opinion that there is a dearth of good Mac games out there?

I’ve been playing EVE as my only game for 3 years … very addictive game, and a great, mature audience.

Getting a Mac client, means i can finally ditch my old windows box entirely.

I think Trinity is the name of the next graphics engine, not the mac client. Also, Codeweavers have given the ability to run eve online for quite a while now.

I’ve been playing even since early ‘04, and can only say that with the new player base of mac and linux users joining, eve will suddenly jump from 25 thousand people on at once to hopefully 50 thousand people on at once. Good or bad thing, only time will tell.

Trinity isn’t the name of the new graphics engine, but is the name of the next expansion, the new graphics engine just happens to be part of the deal. ;)

I recommend everyone at least tries it, it’s a damned good game.

    To remove any confusion:

Trinity is the name of EVE’s current graphic engine which launch with the game back in 2003.

Trinity is also the “new” name for the patch previously called Revelations 3.

The new graphics engine, currently slated to go live with the Trinity patch in early December, is Trinity 2.

    A bit confusing I’ll admit!

hint for those in euro zone: you can buy the game time codes at an internet store in USD and save a lot of money due to cheap USD->EURO exchange ratio ;)

“but not all of us are privy to Intel goodness,”

Just so you know.. the Mac version of eve online only works on Intel-based Macs.

So happy about this! Been playing Eve Online for a year and a half now and love it.

It runs great in Vista, but Mac OS has so many better screen capture programs than just fraps! Time for Eve Combat vids to get an upgrade with Mac users!

One other thing to note is that the new “Premium” graphics are only on Windows system. At this point Mac users like myself don’t get that privilege.

P.S The Mac client runs like a dream and beats having to Boot Camp.

I just spotted this on the Eve Insider Dev Blog:

“Q. Will EVE: Trinity be supported on the Mac and Linux platforms?
    A. The Mac and Linux clients will not initially support the upgraded content but will support the Classic client. TransGaming are already working on the new features needed in the underpinning technology (the Shader Model 3 stuff) to be able to support the EVE Premium client and are targeting having support in place early next year but this is still in the early stages. We will keep you informed where this is at and what our expected delivery is for this support.”
