Quay: Hierarchical Menus via Stacks (Video)

QuayUndoubtedly, the most talked about feature in Leopard is Stacks. While it works well for folders with few files, often if the folder has too many files it quickly loses it’s usefulness. Many people have longed for it to be like it was in Tiger, where you could navigate the hierarchy of the folder from the Dock.

Quay returns the functionality back to that of Tiger, while allowing you to keep your current Stacks in place. It also offers more advanced sorting and viewing options which were not in Tiger. In the following video I’ll show you how I use Quay to have instant access to my entire Mac’s file system via a hierarchical menu Stack.

I prefer the freeware utility HierarchicalDock – http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/26284/hierarchicaldock

Ugh. HierarchicalDock is horrible. Not only does it not open alias folders, but it also changes your monitor’s color profile while it’s open – particularly annoying.

I know the developer is working on bug fixes, but why put up with them to begin with.

    Great video Mike.

I installed Quay a while back and couldn’t live without it. My only gripe is that the other Stacks bring up their context menus with a control-click while Quay’s uses option-click, but it’s a minor complaint. I’m a bit surprised Apple didn’t include this type of Stacks functionality to begin with.

Notice a white’ish square on the lefthand side of the menu? I couldn’t live with that in the long run. I use the Aqua desktop picture and I see it clearly.I see it in the video above too because it has a dark background.

I’ll wait for another solution, like that app that was linked to in the first comment. The author says he will look into the color profile issue for the next release. Also with this Quay I get no smooth animations upon opening a menu. It just pops up. Not somethign I expect with Core Animation in Leopard and what have you ;P
