3 Leopard Apps That I Am Looking Forward To

LeopardToday marks the 1-month anniversary of when Leopard was released to the masses. Now I haven’t seen any statistics yet, but based off what I have seen, I am going to say that Leopard was a smash success.

In this last month, Apple has pushed out one update of Leopard, and developers all across the globe have pushed out updates of their own. As of now, all of the major applications I use have been updated to play nice with Leopard. Of course, there are a few applications that will have their update be Leopard-only, and those are the applications that I would like to take a look at in this post.

1. TextMate 2
The first application that I am looking forward to is TextMate 2. In my community, I do a lot of web design for schools, and local businesses. TextMate is an applications geared toward designers, coders, programmers, or anyone who deals with code markup. TextMate makes it easy by coloring all of the syntax and much more. I use TextMate when coding the websites for my community, just because the syntax coloring makes everything so easy and clean. Unfortunately, I am still not using TextMate to its full potential, but am looking into setting it up to fit my workflow.

TextMate 2 will certainly bring updates and new features that will make it easier to use, and more powerful. Macromates announced a year ago that TextMate 2.0 will require Leopard and make use of some of the APIs and Core technologies available in the OS. TextMate 2 will be a free upgrade to all users. This update will hopefully make it even easier to code than it does now.

Is anyone else looking forward to TextMate 2? Why?

2. Delicious Library 2
Another v2.0 app that is going to be Leopard-only is Delicious Library 2. Delicious Library is a media management applications that lets you scan in all of your books, CDs, Movies etc. and organize them in one place. For most people, Delicious Library is currently more of a novelty, than actually useful. On some level this is true for me, but I can definitely see how this application could be useful to me. If I took the time to set my entire library up, then I know that I would be able to find it useful.

This is what Delicious Monster has to say about DL 2:

Rest assured, we’re eager to get Delicious Library 2 into your hands sooner than later. I think I speak for all of us when I say you’re going be blown away, assuming you’re willing to pony up for the $20 upgrade price. I’m not bragging, I’m actually concerned for your safety. We’re recommending all users purchase and have handy extra underpants before trying Delicious Library 2 for the first time, because you may literally crap your pants.

Now if DL 2 actually makes me crap my pants, then I have to say that it will be an awesome update. I’m not really sure what kinds of features that Delicious Monster is going to implement (unless you have any ideas?) but if they the features are intriguing enough to spend $20 on, I may very well find myself purchasing this update and finally get around to organizing my items.

How many of you currently use DL v1.6.6 as more than a novelty? Will you be buying DL 2?

3. Things
Now Things is the “iffy” one on my list. I am sure that by now many of you have heard of Things, the newly announced GTD app from Cultured code. For one, I am not sure if Things will be Leopard only, and two, there is such an immense amount of GTD apps on the market now, that I’m not sure if Things will bring anything new to the table that I could see myself using.

Things

For the last few weeks I have been using the OmniFocus alpha builds, so my plan was to pre-order it now that the pricing has been announced. I think that I will hold off until I can use Things for myself, and decide which one is better suited towards my needs.

Are any of you looking forward to Things? And I couldn’t find any information on their website which states whether Things will be Leopard-only or back compatible with Tiger. If anyone knows for sure, please let us know in the comments.

So there you have 3 Leopard applications that I am looking forward to. I am sure that I am probably missing a few gems, so please, if you have any that you are looking forward to, then sound off in the comments.

EDIT: I had neglected to actually say what the applications actually do for the people who haven’t heard of them before. Sorry about that.

Oh, yes. I am sooo waiting for Things. Hopefully it will be more suited for me. Just like you I’m holding off with OmniFocus.

Gotta love HoudahSpot 2 for Leopard!

I’ am pretty sure Things will also be Tiger compatible. They would limit their potential market too much by limiting to Leopard. But you may also want to take a look at Midnight Inbox 2 which should also come into private beta soon. Seems that we have a nice competition between OmniFocus, Midnight Inbox and Things – I can’t make up my mind either before I had my hand on Things or Midnight Inbox 2.

I’m looking forward to the release of “Things” as well. It look amazing! Something I might use.. What’s with OmniFocus anyway? I don’t find it that great.

I’m looking forward to all of those (+Headline).

TextMate 2 isn’t free for all users, people who have bought it trough MacHeist have to pay an extra fee. (http://macromates.com/license_policy)

DL2 is one of the main reasons I upgraded to Leopard since it will be Leopard only… looking forward to the new database (backing up craploads of image files sucks) and the built in HTML export. Screenshots of the new interface can be dug up pretty easily and there’s even a test library for the HTML export.
Here’s the HTML test area: http://www.delicious-monster.com/two/
Here’s some screenshots of the new version and some details: http://theocacao.com/document.page/505

@Sven – I had emailed the Midnight Inbox people about a month ago and hadn’t received a reply, but I think I may dig into that again, and see if I can get my hands on the beta. I can see a Things vs. OmniFocus vs. Midnight Inbox post coming in the future :)

@Sjaq – Thanks for the clarification. I had just assumed that the MH bundle licenses were considered full-no-strings-attached licenses.

@Jack – I had completely forgotten about Headline. At the moment I am pretty happy with Cyndicate, but Headline may be able to sway me if it does its job well.

Things will be totally awesome! Its feature set seems to suit me much better than OmniFocus at this point. And TextMate 2…a must have.

I can’t wait for all these! TextMate and Delicious Library I have been waiting for forever it seems (but then again, I blame Apple for delaying leopard ;-) ), and I recently discovered Things and I am really looking forward to it too! :)

I’m pretty excited for TextMate 2 as well…I hope us MacHeist licensees get some type of a discount off the full price! I’m also interested to see how Things compares to OmniFocus.

Does anyone have any more info on Headline? This is the first I’ve heard about it and I can’t seem to find out anything useful in web searches. I’m assuming it’s a NewsFire-like RSS aggregator…

I’ve been using things (the alpha) that the guys at Culture Code hooked me up with for a few days now – I REALLY like it. I’ve been using iGTD for months and it just became WAY too complicated to use. I still have to work on it a bit more but the software works pretty seemlessly, looks great and has almost no learning curve.

  15. steveo on November 27th, 2007 2:49 am

I was lucky enough to get an alpha of things from the beginning and have been using it for a bit over a month now. It’s a beautifully simple app that does what you need it to and doesn’t get in the way. I’ve used every gtd app for os x and I saw this app and pestered the devs ( who are quite responsive and seem to be really great guys) enough to get a copy. Apparently they are in the process of mailing out invites for the beta now and said they will be done by the end of the year. So I suppose sign up on their website for a preview copy and hopefully everyone will be given a shot to test this out.

oh and i’ve tried it on both tiger and leopard and it works perfectly on both

  16. MB-switcher on November 27th, 2007 9:45 am

I am using the alpha version for a some time now and I really like the simplicity of things.
can’t wait till it finally hits final status.

Apparently the new version of Delicious Library will allow you to track household tools (like hammer, wrench, table saw, etc.) as well:
