FacebookSync: Facebook Friends in your Address Book

Facebook SyncI love my Mac’s address book. Perhaps it’s because I haven’t used anything else. But it gets the job done, and hooks into all my applications (Mail.app), and devices (iPhone). Sometimes, my information is a little sparse, and isn’t up to date. I wish the people in my address book could just update their information themselves. Wish Granted. Enter FacebookSync. This little application will allow you to look through your Facebook friends, and add their personal information to your address book.

I’ll tell you this much: FacebookSync isn’t built for those with an eye for design. If you want to quit the application, go to the menu, and click “Quit NewApplication”. Wait. What? This application is a tool, and really nothing else. When you open the application, you have to log in with something that looks similar to a web interface for logging in. Then, you have to close the window, then reopen it to start the import process. Once again, this application doesn’t win points with design or usability.

Next, you’ll be presented with a window with all your current contacts. You can choose to update their info, as well as their photo (which is the profile photo from Facebook). FacebookSync will detect what information you have, and what needs to be updated. Select the profiles you want updated, and voila! Your address book has been updated.

That’s how this tool works, and it works wonderfully, if your friends have filled in appropriate information. This application gets the job done. Then, you are presented with this window.

If you want to run the update again, you have to manually quit, and go through the process again. FacebookSync is available from FSB Software, and is a freeware download.

How do you close the window and then reopen it? I close the login window, the ‘Changes’ window appears a moment later… and then nothing. No contacts appear, nothing else happens.

All I can do is quit the app and assume that it’s effectively useless…

Facebook Sync used to be a really really useful app, a while back, but it was violating the terms of service of Facebook, so they had to trim off a few features :/ Darn Facebook ToS… :/

Great tool. Worked surprisingly well given its…lacking…GUI.

Pete – I just used the program and it worked fairly effectively (gave all of my contacts pictures and updated all of the birthday information) but it didn’t find any of my friends if they weren’t already in the address book with the same name.

    Hope that helps.

Hmm so it won’t fill my empty address book, I actually have to enter them all by hand? So much for this being the app that finally got me using the address book — why bother? The info’s already in facebook…

It killed my account. I used it one day and then the next I could no longer log in!
