Happy Holidays!

Light BloggingI sure hope everyone is having a great holiday season this year. Now might be a good time to get offline, visit some people who need cheering, or just spend some time with the family. You can always bring your Mac along, or maybe buy one for someone you care about.

I decided to hit Koh Tao, this year, a really great island in southern Thailand, until the end of this month. I know some of the other guys are tied up with family, vacations, and other merry making. I can’t speak for all of the writers here but I would expect blogging here at MacApper to slow down until the holidays are over, as we all can use a well deserved break.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2008 everyone! Keep it safe.

Come on! Let us just say it like it should be – Happy Christmas everyone!

@Ivan – I don’t want to get into a religious debate but not everyone celebrates Christmas as some celebrate Hanukkah, others Kwanzaa, some Winter Solstice and some just don’t celebrate anything. So even though you and I may celebrate the Christmas Holiday, not everyone does and Happy Holidays covers all the holidays happening at this time of year and therefore covers a wider audience. Make sense?

    @Britonius

Yes, it makes some sense, but i also think that people shouldn’t just say “Happy Holidays” so as to be politically correct, and not risk stepping on any toes.

People shoud say what they mean ; if you are Christian, wish people a Happy Christmas, if you are Jewish wish them a Happy Hanukkah, and though i don’t know too much about Kwanzaa and Winter Solstice, if they are what you celebrate, then say so! Equally, if you don’t follow a belief system, then say what you mean, wether it is “Happy Christmas” “Happy Holidays” or “Happy Time Off Work”

Frankly, even though i am a Christian, i would rather be wished a Happy Hanukkah than a Happy Holidays, at least Happy Hanukkah tells me that the person i am talking to has something to be celebrating and something they believe in!!

When you live in a country with religious freedom, you should not be afraid to stand up for what you believe in; the secularist movement in America has a lot to answer for in my opinion.

So stand up for what you believe in, don’t let others look down on you, and most of all enjoy your life and never live with regrets!!

    Merry Christmas to you all.

P.S. No, not Xmas, CHRIST is the important part of the word.

    P.P.S. Sorry for the rant

I certainly didn’t take it as a rant as you were just explaining your point of view on the subject.

But if you are a business or just someone try to speak to all three beliefs it is much easier to say Happy Holidays than to say all three. Holiday is actually a combination of the words Holy Days which is the original usage and was used to describe many Holy Days. The usage applies to Christmas if you see it as a Holy Day as it does for the Holy days of other beliefs. So these are the Holy Days or Holidays for several beliefs and therefore encompasses them all with one saying. I think it is quite appropriate depending on your audience. If you know you are addressing only other Christians then Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays would be appropriate, but if you are addressing it to a wide audience Happy Holidays covers them all with one saying and provide well wishes to all on their Holy Days. Check Holy Days in Wikipedia for a more detailed explanation.

Also the idea of using X in place of Christ is actually a Christian concept not a secular or pagan concept. It was used by many early Christian writers. The First three letters of Christ or Christian is CHI which in Greek is written as X. Check it out at this website and many others that explain it very well as it was quite common for Christian writes to say Xmas or Xtian (Christian) or Xianity (Christianity) in place of the full word we use today.
Check Xmas in Wikipedia and other sites for a more detailed explanation.

So it is actually OK to say Xmas as it truly represents Christ, but you might avoid it if you know someone is not aware of this and might take offense because of their lack of knowledge on the subject.

I hope that helps you understand and to not take offense when someone says Happy Holidays or Xmas as they are wishing you Happy Holy Days and Christmas even if they don’t fully understand it. You can just smile inside knowing they are right on track and may not even know it or even it they are trying to degrade it you will know that in fact they are uplifting Christ and our Christian Holy Days unknowingly. :-)
