gMailContacts: Uploading Your Contacts the Easy Way

gMailContacts IconOne of the biggest features that Mac OS X (and Mac apps in general) provides is a more intuitive and efficient workflow. No matter how you try and spin it, Windows apps just can’t compare.

So here’s another nifty little Mac app. Called gMailContacts, said app streamlines the uploading of contacts from Mac OS X’s Address Book to gMail. For every contact, both the person’s name and email address will be uploaded.

Should you wish to register (for the low fee of $5), the app will extend its functionality by uploading the postal addresses and the phone numbers of your contacts. gMailContacts does require Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.10 or later, so users on older systems will have to upgrade to use it.

The biggest drawback to this application is that it’s only a one-way street. In other words, you can’t sync your contacts bidirectionally; you can only upload them from OS X’s Address Book. However, this isn’t really the program’s fault because gMail lacks some information that would be needed for a proper comparison.

gMailContacts is available from Media Atelier. You can obtain its full functionality for just $5.

Will gMailContacts warn you if duplicate contacts are going to be created?

A to G is free. Automagic syncing would be nice.

“However, this isn’t really the program’s fault because gMail itself does not provide any export function for its address book contacts.”
I beg to differ. Look here http://img.skitch.com/20080103-xib6pjug4erw8423h7hhsyxeuf.png

@Tarik: Yup, that’s partly true. gMail’s export function “lacks of some information that would be needed for a proper comparison”.

Updated the post to reflect this change.

Here’s a tip that worked much better for me…

If you are using Leopard, or have an iPhone, you can sync address book with Yahoo. It just so happens that Yahoo supports full CSV export and Gmail supports CSV import… so, simply sync your Address Book with a Yahoo account (create a new one if you don’t have one) and then export the contacts to CSV…. Sign into your Gmail account and import the CSV file. It works flawlessly and you get all the fields, not just name & email.
