Nullriver’s Medialink: Streaming Media from Mac to PS3

MediaLinkHave you ever wanted to easily access your Mac’s media on your PS3? Well now you can. Just a couple days back Nullriver Software, the people behind the hugely popular Connect360, released Medialink. Medialink is an easy to use app that allows you to access your videos, movies, and music on your Mac via your PS3.

Similar to Connect360, Medialink lives in System Preferences. When you open Medialink you can choose exactly what sources you want for sourcing media, like your iTunes library or iPhoto library. Then once you have picked your sources you simply click start and you’re up and away. On the Playstation 3 XMB (XrossMediaBar) you can access all of your selected sources by going under the appropriate sections (Photos, Videos, Music) and selecting the Nullriver Medialink server.

MediaLink Preferences

Medialink supports many different file types, including: MP3, WMA, WAV, MPEG1, MPEG2, MPEG4, H.264, AVI, WMV, ASF, DIVX, JPEG, GIF, PNG, TIFF, BMP and many more. Don’t expect Medialink to play all of your music though if your iTunes content is DRM protected it will not play on your PS3.

You can download Medialink at the Nullriver website and try it for 30 minutes. A Medialink license is available for $20

It’s unfortunate that it doesn’t work as flawlessly as Connect360. I’ve been messing with it for a few days now with no luck. And I’ve not heard back from Nullriver, either.

That being said, they released two patches just today… I’ve faith they’ll get it sorted out, but they really need to develop a better troubleshooting page with some of the more common problems worked out - as I’m seeing a lot of repetition when trying to find my fixes.

I got it working good here but it was buggy for me as well initially. Finally just worked… I noticed after I grabbed the hotfixes that it was more stable though so try that. Overall impressive first impression :)

I did not any trouble at all. Simply installed it and it worked straight away. The only issues I noticed so far was that some XVIDs seems to play jerky, but perhaps it is cause by the PS3 rather than Medialink.

I think it has to do with the Apple Airport Extreme…. I’ve been tweaking everything I can think of and still no luck. It often works with the first video and then if I try it again I get some sort of error.

I’ve not got it to work well either. . my iMac has connect360 install, running on a Airport Exteme and can flawlessly stream Divx downloads without issue. . .viewing pics with media link on PS3 seems really really buggy. Not sure if it’s the app or the hardware. .I’ve provided a detailed experience to Nullriver. I’ve been a happy customer since I first downloaded coonnect360 when I got my xbox. Got my Playstation this christmas and I thought it was going to be as easy - guess that was too much to ask for.

I just tried it & it sort of works. It’s recognizing my .avi files but doesn’t show any .divx files.

Since the new update I’ve had it working like a charm. But it took 3 patches to do it. It’s a shame they didn’t just automate it the way they did with Connect360, but perhaps Leopard’s new craptacular firewall prevented that.

    Question:

I have an external Western Digital hard drive connected to my PS3. Would it be possible to transfer files from my Macbook to the external hard drive via Streamlink and the PS3?

When I try copying a file through Streamlink, it automatically starts copying it to the PS3’s internal hard drive…

    Thanks…
