$100 Dollar iPhone/iTouch Price Drop Soon?

9to5Mac is reporting that they just received a tip about a price drop for the current iPhone and iPod Touch lines within the next month or two (possibly at the February 26th event). The price drop of $100 is to be accompanied by the drop of the 8GB iPod Touch (and possibly the 8GB iPhone) from the line. The iPhone price drops are probably to prepare for the introduction of a newer 3G iPhone in late 2008.

Doesn’t Apple remember the outcry when they dropped the price of the iPhone by $200 a few months after it was released? I hope they think about this before they make this price drop as some iPod Touch users are already upset about having to pay $20 for the January software update. I don’t see why Apple didn’t just make the price change with the introduction of the 16GB iPhone and 32GB iPod Touch by keeping the current prices while upgrading the specs. This is the method they have always used in the past and it seems to have served them well.

Are you listening Apple?

Part of Dear Leader’s beneficent plan to stamp out “early adapter”-syndrome through operant conditioning…

…or just another crazy Apple rumor.

  3. Michael on February 10th, 2008 3:47 am

I can’t believe we’re wondering whether or not apple should be afraid of dropping prices so as not to irk anyone. If they are, then we have no one to thank for the Apple tax but ourselves.

  4. Not Fake Steve Jobs on February 10th, 2008 4:13 am

Apple should forgo aggressive pricing which will increase market share because it will upset early adopters who paid more? This is the stupidest thing I’ve read all day. You should be happy that the products now have a big enough market base that Apple can afford to drop prices without diminishing profits.

  5. Nasim on February 10th, 2008 8:57 am

I don’t understand. What do you suggest then? Apple should not drop the price! In tech world, prices always fluctuate. Some of the laptops from other company dropped by £200 here in UK on christmas. What’s wrong with that?

  6. Steven Owens on February 10th, 2008 12:10 pm

Thanks for everyone’s comments! In my opinion, I don’t see why Apple doesn’t just stick with their past pricing scheme of keeping the same prices but upgrading specs. This makes for less angry users. However, I do see your point though…most tech companies simply drop prices as they can to increase market share. I’m not against increasing Apple’s market share, I guess some Apple users are spoiled by Apple’s past pricing policy.

What Apple event? Oh, the rumoured Apple event?

Why would they stage something like that just to reduce the price of an existing product? Wouldn’t they have just changed the price when they refreshed the products last week?

IF there’s going to be an Apple event (and I’m not convinced) then it’s going to be for something new, not for price cuts.

  8. Jimmy on February 10th, 2008 12:41 pm

PLEASE DROP THE ITOUCH price!!! i have been waiting so long and i really want one! i hope this is true so much

  9. Steven Owens on February 10th, 2008 1:43 pm

    @ Bruce A
The rumored event is supposed to be for the release of the SDK, however, the rumor is that they may also do the price change then as well.

  10. Jimmy on February 10th, 2008 2:32 pm

what is the release of the SDK? when is the rumoer saying that it is going to happen? a couple of months

  11. Austen Saltz on February 10th, 2008 2:54 pm

Look, if you bought the iPod Touch or iPhone when it first came out, you obviously thought that the price was right, or else you wouldn’t have bought it.

Apple has every right to drop the price. Sure, maybe you lost out on some money. But if you thought the price was too expensive in the first place, you wouldn’t have bought it.

  12. Steven Owens on February 10th, 2008 2:59 pm

    @Jimmy
Apple announced the SDK for release at the end of February.

    @Austen Saltz
I see your point (I did buy an iPod Touch at the beginning of January), but I was upset by the charge for the January software upgrade (I just hacked my iPod Touch) – I don’t think Apple should have ever done that. As for the $100 drop in price, I’d be upset about it, but not outraged. I just think people are used to Apple’s normal way of doing things.

  13. Jimmy on February 10th, 2008 3:05 pm

oh okay. thanks. whats the SDK, like what does it stand for? it would be cool if they did i want to get one but just spent a lot on Christmas so cant afford too much

  14. Steven Owens on February 10th, 2008 3:12 pm

    @Jimmy
SDK stands for Software Developers Kit. Basically, it allows third-party developers to develop apps for the iPod Touch and iPhone. Currently, the only way to run third-party apps is to run hacked firmware.

  15. Miles Evans on February 10th, 2008 4:53 pm

Watch this page for SDK news: http://developer.apple.com/iphone/devcenter/

I bought my iPhone the day it came out, and since I don’t use ATT I couldn’t even get my $100 rebate. So now a phone that I bought just last summer is being eclipsed by not only better phones, but much cheaper ones. When a 3G model arrives, then my iPhone is pretty much obsolete as far as I’m concerned. I for one think Apple is fairly good at not alienating customers, but hitting them in the pocketbook seems to be another matter. Of course it’s pretty much the same with anything you buy these days :/

  16. mtx on February 11th, 2008 12:29 pm

They should keep the 8GB iTouch. Who wouldn’t want to buy a Touch for $200?

  17. Jimmy on February 11th, 2008 4:39 pm

seriously, they would sell itouches like wiis if they did that it would be incredible i would buy one the second that happens

  18. Steve on February 11th, 2008 10:05 pm

Yeah, Apple should instead increase prices instead of reducing them.

The people complaining are probably the same morons that whine when the price of gas goes up.

“OH NO! PRICES CHANGE OVER TIME! WHAT ARE WE EVER GOING TO DO?!?!?!”

    Shut it.

  19. Boob on February 12th, 2008 12:37 am

I bought three of the 16g itouches in December and do not beleive apple should charge people $20 for an upgrade when they already paid through the nose, $450.00 each.
    Boob.

  20. Oliver on February 12th, 2008 12:43 pm

Price fluctuation in inevitable in any industry, especially IT. TVs, DVD players, Cameras as well as the I-Phone will constantly go down in price over a long enough time length. Where you upset when Blu-ray and HD-DVD came out that regular DVD players were going to drop in price? It only makes sense that evolution of a product will make the previous, inferior one cheaper.

  23. Glen on February 25th, 2008 2:34 pm

Hmmmm, sell more unit with a price drop or don’t do a price drop so they can please a couple thousands of people who ALREADY bought the product?

well apple announced a price drop today as you guys predicted….PSYCHEE!!!!

Looks like that price drop isn’t going to happen. I’m bummed. I’m ready to buy but was hoping some announcement would come this week out of the big trade show.

  30. FG on July 28th, 2008 6:15 pm

I think the magic capacity/cost ratio for me would be a 16GB iPod Touch for $200 to $250 bucks. I own a 2nd Gen Red 8 GB Nano and I can’t see upgrading for anything less than 16Gb. $400 bucks for a 16GB mp3/video player/webbrowser is still too high in my book.

  31. Elizabeth on September 10th, 2008 12:57 pm

I’m so annoyed. I bought the itouch about two weeks ago. Now I checked the price and it’s almost a hundred dollars less for an updated and better itouch. I was livid I had to pay for an UPDATE and now the company ripped me off one more time. I’m so annoyed.

I know I will NEVER buy a mac product again. This is stupid.

Its the world of electronics, if you can’t deal with it don’t buy them at all. all products start out at a crazy price take for instance the ps3, the xbox360 and LCD and Plasma TV sets. after a period of time they all drop and because some people want to be “popular” and be the ones to brag that they already have an iphone or other new gadget out there, its the luxury tax they pay, for being the first ones. So deal with it or don’t buy it.

  37. Der on February 27th, 2009 7:03 pm
