GarageSale 4: Review and Giveaway

LogoLets face it — we all have lots of junk laying around in our garages. Most of us don’t know what to do with it, so we throw it out. Well, just throw out that mindset and say hello to GarageSale 4, from iwascoding. This app lets you trade your junk for money by helping you create auctions on eBay that potential buyers will find attractive.

As many of us know, the online process for making eBay auctions is horrid! It takes hours to complete, and you end up with an okay-looking eBay auction. However, if you decide to use GarageSale, the auction has an amazing theme, many more options and looks much more reputable. It also speeds up the process so it only takes a few minutes to go from in your garage to up on the internet. GarageSale 4 includes many new features including a Cover Flow theme chooser, free image hosting and many more options for customization of your eBay auctions to make them as eye-catching as possible.

With GarageSale 4, picking a theme to use for your auction has become a snap. The interface of the application itself has been completely redesigned for a better user experience and ease of use. You just choose a style from the top of the pane, then choose a theme from the Cover Flow list, and then the app shows you a preview of what your auction will look like. You can also choose the style of that theme below the theme chooser. This style will be the way that the theme is displayed.

Editing the text of your auction has also become even easier; you can do it straight in preview mode or in editor mode. If you edit the text in editor mode, you can add HTML code to your text. Adding images is also a snap — just drag one into a drop zone in preview mode or drop one onto the dark grey bar in editor mode. You can also import items from Delicious Library to make it easier to write up your description and title.

Once you have added all the text and images you want, you can change options for your auction using the inspector. The inspector offers the same options as offered in the online auction creator. Some of them are useful, whereas some of them, such as bordered (especially in GarageSale), can just be a waste of money.

The preferences in GarageSale 4 also play a major role in your auctions. You can choose to use GarageSale’s Free Picture Service in the Image Server tab. To set up an account for use with GarageSale, you must configure it in the Accounts tab. For the PayPal account that you use with your eBay, you must go through the process of getting an API username and password, which can take a few minutes.

Screenshot

One of the extremely nice features of GarageSale 4 is the ability to send and receive messages from eBay and eBay users from the application itself. In the misc tab of the sidebar, you can go to eBay Messages for . This makes it easy to respond to people pestering and asking questions. Another nice feature is the ability to download auction information, so you know how your auction is doing at any given time.

Once you are done customizing your auction, you can just hit the Start Auction toolbar button, and it tells you how much it will cost. GarageSale 4 offers many new and wonderful features that make it a great and easy-to-use app. If you have a garage filled with junk, give GarageSale a try and see what happens. You know what they say, one man’s garbage is another man’s treasure.

iwascoding has given me five licenses to give away on MacApper! Just comment with 1 thing in your garage that you could sell with GarageSale! The giveaway will end on March 24th, and the winners will be announced shortly after. Remember, if you like GarageSale but don’t win the giveaway, you can buy a copy for just $29.99!

How about an old pants presser? It weighs about a zillion pounds. Or 600 old quilting magazines? An old sewing machine? String trimmer? Three lawn mowers? 15,984 wrenches? Buckets of nails?

  7. Chris Davidson on March 17th, 2008 6:39 am

Nice review. Since switching to a Mac last summer, my old PC has just been collecting dust. It’s about time someone else was disadvantaged with this inferior platform.

If I win a copy of GarageSale, I pledge to vanquish my PC using my Mac. That would be sweet justice!

    Thanks.

  8. Chris on March 17th, 2008 6:41 am

  10. Priscilla on March 17th, 2008 6:43 am

I downloaded the demo a few weeks ago, and found it quite easy to work with. I was pleasantly surprised when it had the Italian local postage options, and I found the developer is also prompt and helpful with support emails.

I have many things I would use GarageSale to sell, among which: some manga series, my old digital camera, iWork ‘06, my GBA SP + some games, my old cell phone. I might also use it to sell some stuff I make myself, like jewellery, candles, and soap.

  11. Francis on March 17th, 2008 6:43 am

  15. Bronson Elliott on March 17th, 2008 7:26 am

My brother gave me his comic book collection to sell. I’ve been dreading doing it because it’s so large. I could see this making it easier and helping me manage the whole process start to finish.

  16. matt on March 17th, 2008 7:27 am

One thing? Come up with one thing? Have you seen my basement? The only reason it is so full is because there is no more room in the garage.

I would love to be in the running for a license. Getting a license would get rid of that last excuse not to clean house.

    ;-)

  17. Maciek on March 17th, 2008 7:38 am

I have a bunch of flatmates to sell on E-Bay, was trying to create an auction few times but never had chance to complete this task. Just too much fuss, with GarageSale it would be much more easy… Eh

I’ve loads of items to sell! Books, clothes, bags!

  19. Joe on March 17th, 2008 7:47 am

  20. Ammon Beckstrom on March 17th, 2008 8:38 am

I’ve got a bunch of MS Press books that I have absolutely no use for now, I’d love to find someone to take them off my hands!

  21. Jim on March 17th, 2008 8:41 am

I have a rather large collection of Coca-Cola commemorative bottles which I really need to get rid of.

I’ve been looking for a desktop app to handle the task, and this looks much nicer than the alternatives.

Of course, if I had an app as easy to use as this appears to be, I’m sure I would find a lot more to sell.

  22. Dennis on March 17th, 2008 8:48 am

I have a stack of text messages form Kwame Kilpatrick’s pager that I’d like to get ride of.

  26. Shane Smith on March 17th, 2008 9:55 am

  32. bateman on March 17th, 2008 10:27 am

Well I have a fantastic Lindy HDMI/DVI splitter that I cant manage to sell on eBay. Maybe, making the auction more attractive would help.

  33. Andy on March 17th, 2008 10:33 am

    What a great application!

With a new baby here, unfortunately some of the toys need to go. Funny how priorities shift.

The first thing I will sell is my coffee table which is very baby unfriendly!

  34. Drew on March 17th, 2008 10:53 am

I have 3 old laptops from the mid-90’s that I’d like to see what I could get for them. Plus maybe I could sell my old cell phone after having upgraded to an iPhone. :)

  36. Nightstrike on March 17th, 2008 11:23 am

I’ve got about five pairs of hardly used skis, because I grew out of them so fast during my teenage years. I bet I could get a pretty penny for those…

  37. Stuart on March 17th, 2008 11:28 am

    A branding iron.

  38. smochs on March 17th, 2008 11:31 am

This might be what I need to actually sell some things on ebay.

I am thinking of selling excess golf clubs!
Or possibly a John Deere Greenstar unit for GPS parallel tracking from my dads tractor!

  39. Be on March 17th, 2008 11:39 am

    Hmm… lets see.

If, as consumers, we are constantly buying new things; and we never get rid of the old things we already have… Pretty soon, we’ll all need another house!

My wife and I eBay quite a bit, but our auctions pages are pretty bland. There is only so much time we can devote to marketing unwanted items, being as we’ve got 5 kids to keep track of. I’m really curios about this software, because if it is as easy as it looks, and we wouldn’t have to spend anymore time to create a better quality auction… Well, that’d be pretty cool.

    Sign us up! =)

  40. Nathan on March 17th, 2008 11:56 am

Lets see, I could sell some some books. Don’t read them anyways.

  41. Mitchell on March 17th, 2008 12:02 pm

I have this weird old piggy bank that I’ve needed to get rid of forever!

  42. billie on March 17th, 2008 12:07 pm

How about a whole box of things? My husband and I actually have a “things to sell on ebay” box that has been sitting in our living room for the last couple of months because I’ve been dreading the posting process. :)
So far it’s got books, clothes, retro doo-dads that someone out there will treasure, the list goes on…

  43. Jeremy on March 17th, 2008 12:12 pm

I need to sell my old Treo, I just got a 16GB iPhone. I also need to sell my old digital camera.

  44. Steve W on March 17th, 2008 12:26 pm

  45. Raj on March 17th, 2008 12:34 pm

  51. M Arnzen on March 17th, 2008 1:50 pm

  59. Robert Bermond on March 17th, 2008 4:47 pm

I’m in the process of moving in with someone, so I’ve got about half a house worth of stuff I could sell. Better than just giving it to the goodwill. I’ve got everything from a bookcase, dinning room table w/ chairs! to 2 computers, and at least half dozen pictures that won’t fit on my new walls.

  60. Ben on March 17th, 2008 4:49 pm

  61. Arthus Erea on March 17th, 2008 5:40 pm

  62. Bob on March 17th, 2008 6:22 pm

Sayonara old PC – the viruses, the Blue Screen of Death, the endless waiting, the ugly OS, the terrible programs, the constant nagging and the millions of untouchable files.

  67. John on March 17th, 2008 11:29 pm

I have lots of things but the thing I really want to sell is my OLD mac clone. I think it was called the S 180 with 128 RAM and upgraded to a G3 processor. For the time it was awesome and it was my first tower. I had a 15″ monitor but when I just looked it would power on, but to sell it on ebay I guess it really doesn’t have to.

  68. Mark Mazur on March 18th, 2008 12:08 am

Hoards of self-help books, that having read everyone of them cover to cover and implemented all suggestions I am now happy as a lark!

  69. Erik on March 18th, 2008 2:10 am

I am dying to sell my ex-roomates junk. Don’t know what to do with it!

  70. Murray on March 18th, 2008 3:48 am

I could sell a book I bought a month ago and haven’t even opened. ‘Top 100 Simplified Tips and Tricks eBay 3rd edition’. Using garage sales seems so much easier.

  71. Siegs on March 18th, 2008 3:54 am

First thing to go would probably be the old Mac Cube, I keep finding more new apps that i need a newer machine to use efficiently and need to find the space.

Being on the move again a more general clean out is probably in order though!

Would love to see these guys incorporate some features like “garagebuy” as well.

  72. James Wong on March 18th, 2008 4:34 am

I would like to sell my Klipsch RVX-54 floorstanding speakers that have been sitting idle for 13 months without a buyer. *Not many people have a pick-up truck I guess*

I would love this to sell the home gym system in my garage that is serving as a divider to store stuff we don’t have anywhere else to put it and my wife’s tupperware (shhhhhh don’t tell her I said that:).

  82. Sam on March 18th, 2008 8:52 pm

I’d probably sell some rare books that I have along with some computer parts. This program would certainly make the task more manageable.

All the computer parts and components I have stacked up in there!

  84. Barry on March 18th, 2008 11:05 pm

  85. Mark on March 19th, 2008 1:24 am

I’ve been thinking of selling my classic Schwinn Orange Crate Lowrider bike w/5-speed stick shift.

  86. Gregor on March 19th, 2008 3:45 am

I’ve purchased on eBay for several years, but have never sold anything. Recently, I’ve vowed that will change and this might be just the thing to help me find new homes for some of my books, skis, software, etc that I’m not using anymore.

  87. Hark! on March 19th, 2008 4:04 am

Hmmm…something from my garage to sell? It would definitely have to be the treadmill that I bought last year to help motivate my wife and I to start exercising. However, I kinda need something to help motivate me to actually step on the thing and pizza is not one of them!

  88. Mark on March 19th, 2008 6:09 am

I have a bedroom furniture set in my garage that I need to sell.

  89. Winrecover on March 19th, 2008 8:45 pm

I am moving house (interstate) and I have found so much stuff I should sell rather than cart it all interstate. From PC’s, CD’s, furniture and books, everything will probably go on ebay. I just bought my first mac after being a pc user for 15 years…hey, this could be my first bit of mac software! :) I’ll probably give it a shot anyway.

  90. ErichD on March 20th, 2008 4:30 am

    Greetings form Germany,

  95. Fraser on March 21st, 2008 10:24 am

  96. Jose on March 21st, 2008 10:03 pm

I need to sell a small cuban boy. Preferably overnight mail, but UPS Ground is ok too. Cannot guarantee condition of received item.

  97. Walter Mitty on March 22nd, 2008 3:43 am

I have a slightly used 14″ LCD monitor which could probably fetch me a few pounds on eBay, but with GarageSale I could probably up that by 20-30%.

  98. GoingCoastal on March 22nd, 2008 2:34 pm

I would use GarageSale 4 to help me get rid of all the crap the former owner of my house left in the garage. Most of it’s too good to throw in the trash, but, at the same time, nothing I want to keep. I’d donate the proceeds to my kids’ school.

  99. HaZse on March 23rd, 2008 7:25 pm

PSP is just covering dust, for the last on year. Would sell it and buy some sweet RAM for my MacBook :)

  104. Mario on March 24th, 2008 12:30 pm

[...] week I reviewed GarageSale, the very useful app for selling things on eBay. iwascoding was nice enough to give us [...]

  108. MAC411 on April 16th, 2008 7:38 pm

Today I downloaded and installed GarageSale 4.0 via their software update utility in Garage Sale 3.4. Unfortunately I over look that it was a paid update. Probably because in all my years working with software venders I’ve never come across an instance where a developer as used their software update utility to push a “pay-for-upgrade.”

Their tech support office recommended that I down grade to 3.4.3. This solution is unacceptable because it means that I’ll loose all of my past work. Let’s hope they make good on their dissipative download practice.
