The Quickest Tip for Time Machine

LogoTime Machine was an awesome addition to OS X, and it works brilliantly. However, to me, it can be a bit annoying to have Time Machine in the Dock; I’m always hitting it when I don’t mean to. So to solve this little problem, I’ve found a better place to keep it…Finder!

Time Machine is part of the Finder (thinking a little outside the box), as it is basically an extension of the Finder’s functionality, so why not make it a little bit more part of the Finder - Drag the Time Machine icon, from the Applications folder onto the top pane of the Finder window, et voilà! - you can remove it from your dock, and still have a quick way back to the past

    What is the icon next to your QuickLook icon on the left?

    @Wes

    It’s a paths button. right click to customize the toolbar and it’s right in there. basically same thing as holding command or control and clicking on the location title at the very top of the finder window.

    Time Machine is context-sensitive for applications that have explicit support for it (Mail & iPhoto are the only ones I know of besides Finder), so I’m wondering if using this tip cuts one off from using TM in those contexts?

    @Todd…it does cut the functionality,having it ONLY in the finder, it means that you can only use it in the finder.
    However as Domantas points out it can reside in you menu bar…. I just like it in Finder because it’s handy, as 99% of the things that are recovered are finder-related!

    I’m trying to understand why you just don’t remove the Time Machine icon from your dock. How often are you going back in time for a file? It’s one of the first icons I remove (along with Mail and Safari) after I install 10.5. When I do need it I call it up with QuickSilver or Spotlight.

    I’m with Ben. Spotlight makes calling any application lightning-quick. I never “got” Quicksilver, but Spotlight I get, and it works beautifully (assuming I don’t get a case of stumblefingers while typing, anyway ;) )

    Truco: Accede a Time Machine desde el Finder…

    Conozco a gente que en el Dock, sólo le gusta tener las aplicaciones que tiene abiertas, para tener las menores cosas posibles. A mi también. Pero claro si quitamos el icono de Time Machine, ¿luego cómo entramos?
    Pues muy fácil. El truco consiste …

    As Ben and Bruce A said, I don’t understand the point of Times Machine in the Dock or anywhere. If I ever need it, I just CMD + Space and “time machine” and it’s there where ever i need it.

    I like to keep things simple. I probably have one of the cleanest Docks: Finder, Adium, iTunes, Safari, Downloads stack and Trash.

    Only the things I always keep active. Nothing else is worth beeing there for me.
