UPDATED: Keep Track of Your Spendings with Cents

LogoSome people have a hard time keeping track of where all their money goes. Cents, from MacMage, is a very simple application that helps you do just that! You can add different purchases to Cents and it will tell you how much you have spent. Cents is a very simple app, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t useful.

To add purchases just click the menu bar icon. A list pops up with all your different purchases. On top of that list are two text boxes, one for the name and one for the price. After hitting Enter the new purchase will be added to the list. If you want to see your total spent just hover over the menu bar icon and a small bubble will show up under it displaying the total amount spent. Cents also includes a feature to export to another money management app like iBank and Cha-Ching.

So what if you already have a finance app? Cents is very simple and quick, no need to open up an application. Cents sits in the menu bar and uses 0% of the CPU. If you ever want to add the information to your other application you can just click preferences and then export. Cents is also great for people who don’t want something as big or expensive as iBank but just want a small application to easily keep track of some things.

The developers at MacMage already have future plans for Cents. Soon they plan on creating an iPhone and iPod Touch version that will allow syncing between the desktop and mobile versions. Try out the demo for Cents today. The full version is available for $4.99 from MacMage.

UPDATE:I forgot to mention that they had some licenses to giveaway! Post a comment to be entered in a random drawing for one of three licenses for Cents. The winners will be chosen next week.

What happens if someone wins more than one of your giveaways? I have a good feeling about winning both the “Times” and “Cents” licences, that’s why I am asking! :D

This application is really simple. However, it was very useful. It comes recommended for the person who doesn’t need a function as complex as me.

I think you need to post some requirement instead of a random giveaway

If the users are required to post an improvement suggestion or feature wanted, the developer could get some nice input for their app

Oh yeah and here is my comment: This is nice to track your spending in short term

Now let’s wait for the next gazillionth of entries :D

    @dai
That’s why this app works so well, it’s fast, easy, and stripped down to what it needs to be.

I currently track my expenses with Excel. I don’t need anything fancy. But Cents’ simplicity makes it very attractive. Sometimes keeping things simple go a long way.

  7. Pawel on May 8th, 2008 3:11 am

I would love to test how it works :) excel is just to “microsoft” to keep my money info in it..:)

    Nice idea, but…
All the stuff i buy at my computer goes on card or paypal and therefore on my bank statement. Might be an idea for an iPhone toy, but frankly a piece of paper will do.

  9. dai1976 on May 8th, 2008 4:17 am

    Great concept.
But it works only on Mac OS 10.5.

Seems like a sleek simple application, the iphone sync support would be great when it comes out.

  11. perfume on May 8th, 2008 4:36 am

I think it is better when the kind of currency can be chosen.
However, it is an application that can be expected in the future.

  12. dt on May 8th, 2008 4:59 am

When having tried, it did working the same as the expectation.
I will add it to the want list.

  13. daisuke on May 8th, 2008 5:15 am

It was an application that was able to be used though it was small :)

  14. Peter on May 8th, 2008 5:38 am

The Cha-Ching integration makes it very attractive. Especially with that pricetag.

  15. marieboyer on May 8th, 2008 6:12 am

Hmm. I have ChaChing but have never installed it because I do not need that much money management. Do not have that much money to manage. But I have lots of cents. This may be perfect.

  16. Michael F on May 8th, 2008 6:39 am

This is *just* what I need!

  17. Joe Turner on May 8th, 2008 8:22 am

This looks like a great supplement to Cha-Ching. Record your purchases here, then every week, put them into Cha-Ching!

  18. Angelo on May 8th, 2008 10:52 am

Looks like a great concept … I hope that I will win a licenses …

I’ve always had trouble keeping track of money because there was no easy unobtrusive way to do it. This looks awesome.

  21. Aditi on May 8th, 2008 4:06 pm

I checked this program out, it seems really sweet. Definitely something I could use.

  22. Nick c on May 8th, 2008 4:18 pm

wow, very good idea for keeping track of my smaller purchases!

Does it have a dashboard widget to go with it?

  23. Sinbad on May 8th, 2008 8:14 pm

So simple! And that is what makes this program so great. I’d like to be able to customize the menu bar icon.

  24. zot on May 8th, 2008 9:55 pm

It is a very simple application. Because operation is quick, it is possible to use
    it without feeling the stress.

  28. John on May 9th, 2008 7:05 am

I would love to see an application like this use bonjour to sync with others on a local network. The idea, my wife and I have this on our Macs and they sync so we can see what each has entered.
