@ Jonas: First of all, thank you and you're welcome. :)

As for your performance issue, that's very bizarre. I can't imagine why my book would run it any better than yours if it's the same general machine. The only performance issues I can generate with Spore on this machine are pretty predictable ones - like if I run it while I have a bunch of other crap going on in the background too, otherwise it's nice and smooth. I suppose the performance drops a bit when lots is going on in-game, and I haven't tested it too extensively in the later game stages on my Macbook Pro, but in any case I think it's worth taking Geoff's advice and seeing if that helps...I'm also curious to hear more reports of performance now!

@Pixeltoy: I'm wondering what you mean by "5 minutes of play" ? I'm not sure how you could only get 5 minutes worth out of the game since it takes longer than that to even progress further than the first stage of the game...that being said, I am also quite eager for Starcraft II. :P

@Jonas:

Turn the lighting effects off. That's what I've done, and my Macbook Pro runs the game sweetly with all the other settings on high.

Thanks for a very enjoyable and spot-on review, Marius. However, one thign you wrote confused me (or, rather, two things, but the Civilization post above cleared that up ;) ): you say the game runs well on your two-year old MacBook Pro on high settings. I've a two-year old MacBook Pro, and if I raise the settings even to the medium level, the game becomes *completely* unplayable, generating frames per second of about 1-10.

So, I was under the impression that Spore, while a very charming game with many strong points, was a terrible ciderized mac port. Your experience suggests the opposite, so I'm starting to think something is wrong with me old MBP...

Have you (or anyone else reading this blog) heard any more verdicts on how Spore runs in Mac OS X in comparison to windows? I suppose I could always install it under windows meself, but I'm very much out of space at the moment, and I don't want to yield too much of my limited hard drive space to that parasite of an OS ;)

SPORE- checked the free demo that came with the paper a few weeks back. Took 30 minutes of installing. 5 mins of play. Compared to WOW or Warcraft or Starcraft or Diablo or... this game is nothing but hype! A type of msn with moving avatars?
Waiting for Starcraft II. Until then, Warcraft III for me on my Macbook- even if W3 is not intel native yet.

While it's grand that it's out on MAC at the same time as PC, I highly recommend anyone considering buying this game to play a friends copy first. If you can't read the reviews (user reviews, not paid e-zines). While there are some cool aspects to it, I've had the game about 2 weeks, and only playes 3 days worth before uninstalling!

Hope this helps!

The Mac version of Spore can't be downloaded from the website you linked to (if it can be downloaded at all). Below the trailer it says "The digital build of Spore is PC only and does NOT support Mac."

Just thought I'd let you know. I'm glad EA decided to release this for Macs, although the support has yet to be seen. The other most recent games EA decided to release for Mac (the Cider six that were mentioned on Apple's website, including Command and Conquer 3 and Battlefield 2142) have terrible support. I only got the 2142, but the performance was terrible and the Mac updates were released at least a month after the PC ones. So far the only expansion pack for 2142, which is rather small and should be easy to Cider-ify, still hasn't been released and it looks like it never will be.

Hopefully EA will do a better job with Spore.

@jonesy: You're quite right about Civilization, I was meaning to make the allusion to strategy games in general. My mistake.

As for the DRM, they did relent, even if it's not a particularly generous concession on their part. I agree with your analogy, but at the same time at least they actually listened to the uproar instead of ignoring it a la Mass Effect...baby steps, right? :)

Um, Civilization isn't an RTS, it's a Turn Based Strategy game and is nothing like Starcraft or AoE.

As to the DRM. Relented? Where do you get that? All EA has done is given you 2 more installs. Its like Bubba the prison rapist promising to only do you every other day rather than every day.

Nope, I'm not buying.
