HandBrake 0.9.3: Now with More Video Conversion Tools
A few weeks ago, we posted about alternatives to VisualHub and AudialHub, because Techspansion recently shut its doors forever. Just after this was posted, HandBrake received a major upgrade: Version 0.9.3. Handbrake was the premier DVD ripping application for the Mac, and now it supports formats other than DVDs! All you have to do is drag a video file onto its icon and you can convert it just like you converted a DVD before.
I must say, when comparing the new version of HandBrake to any of the other apps we mentioned before, it is the clear winner. First of all, it’s completely free. In fact, it’s also open-source, so you can even download the Cocoa source and edit it freely (for your own use). Second, it supports DVDs, which none of the other apps I mentioned did. Third, it gives you the largest amount of options for your conversion. HandBrake comes with some great built-in presets, but if you feel the need, you can customize the numerous fields it gives you. Fifth, it is supported on all platforms. So, if you are using a Windows or Linux machine somewhere, you can still use HandBrake! And the last, but definitely not worst, reason: HandBrake is still in beta! You think it’s great now, well just wait until 1.0 is released!

Yup, Handbrake’s just reached the state when we don’t need Techspansion’s VisualHub any more
Uh, I don’t see that it supports WMV, FLV, DV, or MPG, all of which were supported by VisualHub, so I don’t think it is a replacement. If all you want is an MP4 file, you’re good to go.
Alright, if somebody really does want to export to those other formats (could be useful), why not use MPEG streamclip? It’s free and it could always do a bit more than Visualhub.
