Tutorial: Mac Internet Sharing (with Xbox 360)

xboxA very hidden and somewhat unused feature of Mac OS X is the internet sharing application which can be found in System Preferences > Sharing > Internet Sharing.  This feature is very basic and easy to setup but it allows you to share the incoming internet connection on your Mac with other computers in your vicinity.  You can even turn your Mac into a wireless hub using this feature.  We’ll help show you how to set this up properly in this guide, along with a step by step tutorial of how to use your Mac’s internet connection in order to get your Xbox 360 online without having to purchase a wireless adapter.

The first step is getting familiar with Internet Sharing.  As mentioned above, you need to navigate to System Preferences > Sharing > Internet Sharing (which is an option listed on the left).  Once on the Internet Sharing option page, you need to setup exactly what you want to do before you proceed to turn it on.  As you can see, you need to select where you want the shared connection to come from and then where you are going to output it.  So, if you want to turn your Mac into a wireless hub, you would select “Share your connection from: Ethernet”…”To computer using: Airport”.  You can mess around with any configuration here including Airport to Ethernet, Bluetooth to Ethernet, etc.  In order to enable it, you must click the check box next to internet sharing.  You can now turn your Mac into any sort of internet hub that you want it to be.  This works great when you are somewhere such as a hotel which might only have one Ethernet plug but you have 4 laptops.  You can create a wireless hub for everyone else in the room to connect to.

One of my favorite uses for this feature is sharing my MacBook’s Airport connection with my Xbox 360 through an Ethernet connection.  I have been doing this for years, and it has saved me the $100 I would have had to spend on a wireless adapter for my 360.  Here is a step by step guide on how to setup your Xbox 360 to share an internet connection with your Mac:

1. Enable internet sharing as described above in System Preferences.  You will want to select sharing from Airport to Ethernet.

2. Connect your Mac to your Xbox 360 using an Ethernet cable.

3. Open up Terminal on your Mac by going to Applications > Utilities.

4. In terminal type “ifconfig en0″ (that is a zero)

5. In the terminal screen, you need to look for the line which displays as “inet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx”.  Write this number down.  For example, mine is currently 192.168.2.1

6. Also get the IP Address of your wireless router.  This can be found in System Preferences > Network> Select Airport > Advanced> TCP/IP Tab > Router.  Write this number down.  Mine was 10.0.1.1

7. Start your Xbox and get to the Network Settings menu.  You will now have to put some numbers in manually…

8. For IP Address you need to enter the inet number you found in your terminal but with the last number being 1 digit higher.  For instance, mine would be 192.168.2.2

9. For Subnet, enter 255.255.255.0

10. For Router/Gateway enter the inet number from earlier.  Mine was 192.168.2.1

11. For DNS (both primary and secondary) enter the IP of your router.  Mine was 10.0.1.1

12. You need to leave PPPoE and advanced settings blank (default was off and automatic).

13. Test the connection and enjoy having a shared internet connection to your Xbox from your Mac.

If you need any help with this, please leave a comment and I’ll get back to you.

Also, do not forget to set the correct ports for forwarding in your internet gateway for the 360′s IP address. Otherwise you’ll be working with a STRICT NAT…
Haven’t tried this method, but it sounds like it should work. I’ll check into configuring Mac OS X IPtables.

when i try to connect to xbox live, network connects, but internet fails. i know i’ve done all steps right, and when my ethernet cable is connected to my mac, i can not use my internet, though it says it’s connected. any suggestions?

  3. Alex on January 31st, 2009 12:45 am

I’m the exact same problem as the above user (lui)

    Any fixes?

  4. Jim on February 1st, 2009 8:56 am

This works on my MacBook running 10.5.6 and my XBOX 360 with NXE update installed.

You must first go into System Preferences > Sharing and enable internet sharing.
Then, if you want to, disable your firewall (System Preferences > Security > Firewall). If my firewall was not disable XBox Live gave me a NAT error, but still let me connect.

    Network Settings:
    Manual IP/Manual DNS

    IP Address: 192.168.2.2*
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 192.168.2.1*

    Primary DNS: 192.168.2.1**
    Secondary DNS: 192.168.2.1**

*Run “ifconfig en0″ in the Terminal, use the IP address returned after “inet”. I’ve been told that it’s always 192.168.2.1, but I’m not sure. For “IP Address”, add 1 to this number, for “Gateway”, use the number.

** This is the same number returned using “ifconfig en0″. Others have said to use the DNS of the ISP or the router, this has never worked for me. Instead, using the IP of the Mac did.

ok wen i type “ifconfig en0″ in the Terminal, I get this:

    en0: flags=8863 mtu 1500
    ether 00:23:df:7b:58:92
    media: autoselect status: inactive
    supported media: none autoselect 10baseT/UTP 10baseT/UTP 10baseT/UTP 10baseT/UTP 100baseTX 100baseTX 100baseTX 100baseTX 1000baseT 1000baseT 1000baseT

It doest say inet anywhere, and I don’t see anything that looks like an IP address, if thats wat we’re looking for. I’m not sure why. I am using the MacBook OS X Version 10.5.6 if that matters at all.

does anyone think this can be done using an ethernet connection from the modem to the computer, and another from the computer to the xbox? cause i have the regular ethernet plug on my computer and i have an extra usb ethernet adapter from another computer.

i had the same problem some of you had with the internet failing on the xbox. You should do all the steps above but befor you finish try system prefrences> sharing>services and then enable personal web sharing. it worked for me hope it works for you too.

  18. john on February 14th, 2009 4:30 am

well, now that i cant even get a network connection for some reason it doesnt seem like anything is working at all

  19. john on February 14th, 2009 4:48 am

good grief. we’ll see how long it lasts

  25. Andrew Garcia on February 22nd, 2009 2:28 am

The number i get after inetis different every time I restart my compueter and it always starts at 169.xxx.xxx.xxx You say it should be 192.xxx.xxx.xx is this odd? Also I got a network set up but was unable to get on the internet. It said my DNS was wrong. My DNS was 192.168.1.4, you said it should b3 10.0.1.1, is that odd?

  26. Adamwetsch on March 9th, 2009 11:16 pm

If your having trouble with your 360 not connecting to the internet but it will connect to the network it’s more than likely a problem with your DNS. to fix it go to the terminal (look above for instruction on where to find the terminal if you don’t know how) and type “cat /etc/resolv.conf” notice the space between “cat” and the first slash. Something like this should come up

    $ cat /etc/resolv.conf
    domain hsd1.co.comcast.net.
    nameserver 68.87.85.98
    nameserver 68.87.69.146

The two addresses are your DNS servers that your Internet provider has supplied for your network. Now type the first one into you Primary and secondary DNS on your Xbox and you should be in business.

  27. Andrew Garcia on March 10th, 2009 4:46 am

I typed in “cat /etc/resolv.conf” and only got

    andrew-garcias-macbook:~ gwarcia$ cat /etc/resolv.conf
    nameserver 192.168.1.1

am I messing up? Should I have the two addresses or is the one sufficient?

    Thanks for the help.

  28. jon brand on April 4th, 2009 4:00 pm

I’m having the same problems as everybody else it seems. My 360 will connect to my macbook, but will not connect to the internet. I have checked to make sure my DNS server settings are correct, and that did not seem to effect anything. Could it be my wireless router being stingy? I have a D-link router, thats pretty much the lowest of the low. What kinds of routers are everybody else using who have this problem?

  29. Bram on April 10th, 2009 3:13 pm

So if all else fails use the cord that came with the Ethernet cord that came with the xbox not one you already owned, such was my problem and after deciding to troubleshoot I switched the cords and worked perfectly, just to mention I am using a mac to connect and it all worked out very well.

  39. ian on May 20th, 2009 3:15 pm

again, i also am having trouble.

same as many other people, mine was working for a few days and now all of a sudden something’s wrong with the DNS and connecting to the xbox live or xbox.com servers.

the difference is the fact that i used this exact method all winter break and it worked perfectly.

for my primary and secondary DNS, i’ve tried every method. the actual way described in the tutorial, the 4th comment and using inet for both DNS’, and even bumping up the inet 1 digit, and using 192.168.2.2 for both of them.

nothing is working, not even enabling personal web sharing. this is so incredibly frustrating because it worked before and now it just doesn’t.

  40. Timothy on May 22nd, 2009 4:33 pm

You have to turn off YOUR FIREWALL! Under system pref>security>firewall (set to allow all incoming traffic) also under internet sharing turn it off and on and make sue the window pops up saying “start sharing” I had a headache trying to get my DNS to work but after this works like a charm. Works Great! I had some trouble at first. Then I went to System Preferences — Network and manually entered my IP Address. For some reason the automatic DHCP config was assigning some random address.

Configure: Using DHCP w/ manual address
    IP Address: 192.168.2.1 (per directions)
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
DNS Server: in the same place (System Preferences–Network) see what DNS Server and Search Domain your connection has. In my case 10.0.1.1
Search Domain: follow DNS step… in my case ca.cox.net

    that fixed my problem

For those of you having problems with the internet connection failing when plugging in the ethernet cable, try this:

    1. Go to System Preferences > Network.
    2. Select “Ethernet”
    3. Set “Configure” to “off”
    4. Type in your routers ip adress in DNS.
    5. Hit apply and insert ethernet cable.

    Solved the problem for me

  69. laura on October 14th, 2009 4:47 pm

none of this is working for me. as soon as i test connection i get “test failed” instantly. I’ve tried everything that i can think of. I restored to defaults to try again and it will not let me enter the subnet mask. says its not valid, must be in xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx format (which it is). Its just not connecting at all.

    Thanks for the info!

I actually had already set this up (albeit with different settings) and it was working fine until yesterday, when for some reason it stopped working. Repeating everything from step 1 following your guide worked like a charm!

I was having such a hard time, follow step 4 and it works 100%

  78. james Flagg on November 23rd, 2009 12:47 am

what happens when you cant find the inet number? where is it? i dont see it after entering the config code

  79. David on November 23rd, 2009 12:54 am

I had the same problem James, try entering just “ifconfig” without the “en0″. You should get a longer list and there will be a line with “en0″ at the begging. That’s where you should see the inet number, probably 192.168.2.1
hope this works for you too.

  80. jason on November 23rd, 2009 12:50 pm

if you follow the directions for 10.5 (i just tested on 10.6 and it works) at http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20071223001432304&query=xbox%2B360 you should be able to set everything on the xbox to auto and get it to work

  81. james Flagg on November 23rd, 2009 12:59 pm

Thanks guys I finally got it. I have entered all of the numbers in properly, and when I test the connection, I am able to connect to the network without any problem. However, during the testing process, I am not able to connect from the network to x-box live. Any suggestions?

  89. taylor Gilmore on December 8th, 2009 12:51 am

What if I’m trying to do this with two different xboxes. One works perfectly and now my buddy got a mac and his xbox wont connect to xbox live through his mac with the same settings as mine. we changed the ip address to 192.168.2.3 so they wouldnt have the same ip but he is getting a DNS error

    any ideas?

  90. Ferris on December 9th, 2009 1:27 am

After some pain in @$$ I finally got it to work. Wasn’t trying to hook into XBOX, but a Directv HD Receiver. Using OS X 10.5.8 on macbook pro
    What I did–
    1. Start with the previous posts of sharing your internet connection.
1.1. type “ifconfig en0″ in the terminal and view your inet address–mine was 192.168.2.1

    2. Go into System Prefs / Network
2.1. click on AirPort, then advanced — make note of your router address–mine was 192.168.2.1–because this poses as a conflict with the inet address i logged into my router and changed it’s address to be 192.168.0.1

    3. Select Ethernet
3.1. In the configure drop-down box, select “Using DHCP with manual address”
3.2. Click on the IP address and use inet address (192.168.2.1)+1 –should be 192.168.2.2
3.3. Type your router address in the DNS server block (see item 2.1)
3.4. click apply — you are done with configuring the computer

    4. XBOX setup (For my example I am using Directv HD DVR, but items should be the same)
4.1. IP address should be a non-conflicting IP address. If you used 192.168.2.2 in step 3.2, then add 1 more (192.168.2.3)
    4.2. Subnet Mask = 255.255.255.0
4.3. Default gateway = the number from item 3.2
4.4. DNS server will be your router IP address from item 2.1

Hope this helps some of you. If you need clarification on anything I have done, let me know. I will try to answer whatever I can and

—I have done the steps listed in this forum so if all else fails, give this a try and repeat my steps. **** http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20071223001432304&query=xbox%2B360 ****

Also try configuring your computer first before connecting your ethernet to your xbox.

  96. sharkguy on December 27th, 2009 3:20 am

Ok, so I have read through the thread a few times and it seems like quite a few people a problem with the NAT showing up as strict or moderate (as I am), yet there are no responses with directions on how to fix this. If someone could post some, that would be great.
I read that I need to connect the correct ports for forwarding in your internet gateway for the 360's IP address. What does this mean and how do I do it?

    1: Follow this: **** http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20071223001432304&query=xbox%2B360 ****

2: go through Ferris’ directions. They key for me was the conflict with the router address and the inet address. Be sure they do not conflict and you should be good.

doesn’t work for me, my xbox won’t connect at all. tested and my internet and network runs fine. what am i doing wrong?

  117. Zeb Mehring on January 17th, 2010 2:03 pm

well, if the step to connect to xbox live is failing, u need to download a program, idk what it is but try flash player, shockwave, and javascript. If none are connecting on test connection (viewed on the xbox) then it means u did the steps wrong.

  118. Zeb Mehring on January 17th, 2010 2:07 pm

  123. Zeb Mehring on January 23rd, 2010 6:14 pm

well, all i know is how to fix the internet fail step. Set ur secondary DNS to 0.0.0.0 or nothing. If Xbox live fails, call your cable company, they might be blocking it.

my question is not 100 relevant to the xbox thing, but ive just managed to share my internet through AirPort, from my mac mini, and Internet is working flawlessly on my MacBook, one question i have, does the main server (mac mini) must be on for the internet to be working through AirPort,

    thanks heaps

  129. Joe on January 28th, 2010 2:55 pm

I connected my xbox through my mac for the first time the other day and followed the process at the top of the page. Everything worked fine the test connected and I signed up for xbox live. The next day however when I went to log in it wouldn’t work and when i tried to renter the same details (ip address, DNS etc) into the network configuration screen it said the DNS server can’t resolve the names of the xbox LIVE servers or xbox.com. The just keeps sending round in circles getting me to turn the router on and off and change the setting from manual to automatic then when that doesn’t work manual again. Anyone else had this or no how to fix it.

  130. zeb mehring on January 28th, 2010 10:25 pm

Same problem. If network to internet fails set the secondary DNS to 0.0.0.0 then you should be good.

  131. William on January 31st, 2010 3:39 pm

Iv’e tried every solution above (really iv’e read though them all) and nothing has changed. As almost everyone has reported “it worked fine at first but then it did not work” that was the problem for me. the problem started after 1 day when the nat became moderate then after a weeks time the internet failed. I still can obtain a network connection but how do that help me? My error message is “Your dens severs cannot connect to xbox.com severs, ” I have tried all the possible DNS listed above. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. (note i call xbox and they said it was out of their support boundary!)

  132. Zeb Mehring on January 31st, 2010 3:54 pm

dude, i called xbox too, what software r u runnin? If it’s snow leopard then just follow the original steps, except change the secondary DNS to 0.0.0.0 and it should work. If ur runnin something older (or if that advice didn’t work) then all i can do to help u is turn of xbox, cpu then router, wait 30 secs then turn on in the opposite order. That should work and i hope it helps.

I have two inet numbers. What does this mean?

I’ve tried following this step by step. I figure one of these is my computer and the other is my xbox.

So far, I still can’t get past the DNS part for my xbox.

    inet 169.254.31.96
    inet 192.168.2.1

  139. Ferris on February 9th, 2010 7:25 pm

    AAron, Use the 192.68.2.1 number.
All, Make sure that your router IP address isn’t the same as your Inet #

I created a quick excel doc that when you plug in your numbers, it will output what you need to plug into the xbox. Hope it helps.

  145. Josh Jenkins on February 20th, 2010 6:49 pm

ok, soo i found out that by connecting your xbox 360 via ethernet cable to your mac an error may appear while testing the connection. The error im talking about is the DNS server cannot resolve the names… ect.. If u go back to System Preferences > Network Sharing, turn sharing off, wait about 10 seconds, and turn it back on and test the connection again, it connects, but comes up with NAT settings set to strict.

Heres where i need some help from you guys…

With the NAT settings set to strict, i cant join certain party chats because the NAT settings vary depending on how you connect to your internet source. i need to know how to change my NAT settings to open..

    is this possible?

if u have a solution for me, email me at: BlaznDemLs@yahoo.com/

I would realy appreciate any feedback on this one, and im sure lots of other ppl would too.

Thanks so much for this! I’d been trying for a couple of days with no luck to get my xbox online (and no help from my service provider who simply gave me a new set of DNS numbers that made no difference).

After reading your post I followed the instructions and was online in 5 minutes.
It’s ingenius – essentially allowing your xbox to piggy back off your laptop’s web connection.

    Thanks so much!

didnt work, i did everything right, god, im stuck with using my gay pc and constantly dying in cod due to bad connection

  149. TonyL on March 1st, 2010 11:27 am

My present accommodation provides wireless based internet access only and it requires that you first log in to a web based authentication page (via a browser) before it will allow your browser full access the internet.

This system only allows one (1) concurrent connection, which means that at any point only my wife’s Vista PC or my own Mac mini can be connected (wirelessly) to the Internet.

I obviously would like to have more than one concurrent connection to the internet and so, having first turned off the wireless on my wifes Vista based laptop, I’ve been endeavoring to connect her laptop to my Mac mini via an RJ45 (straight or crossover?) cable and have it share my Mac mini’s wireless connection to the Internet.

I’m running Mac OSX 10.6.2 on a Mac Mini
My wife is running Vista Home Premium SP2 on a high end Sony Vaio.
I have turned off the firewall on her laptop.
I have a normal RJ45 cable and a crossover cable.
I do not have access to the buildings router (as that’s owned by the landlord).

The details of my Mac mini AirPort connection are:
    IPv4 Address: 192.168.2.97 <– dynamically assigned
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Router: 192.168.2.50
    DNS Servers: 192.168.2.2
    Search domains: aldas.com
    NetBios Name: MACMINI
    Workgroup: Workgroup

Given that I can manually assign the IP settings on the Ethernet adapters of the Mac mini and the Vista laptop… does anybody have any suggestions as to what I should set the relevant IP fields on each machine, so that the Vista Laptop can share the wireless connection being provided my the Mac mini… and / or any other things one should know in order to make this work?

    Cheers,

    Tony

Ok. so I’ve been entering everything alright so far. However, my xbox will pass the IP and DNS test, but then will fail the MTU test. How do I fix this?

  157. ? on March 13th, 2010 7:14 am

I got mine to work by just connecting my xbox to my modem which is connected to my airport and the other stuff and it worked.

  158. Jeff on March 13th, 2010 1:46 pm

So I’ve followed all of the steps, and my xbox passes network and internet. At first it would fail at the Xbox Live part of the test. Not it says that my NAT is moderate. I thought I could deal with that, but moderate NAT doesn’t allow me to do anything, I can’t d/l demos or videos, can’t preview new games, absolutely nothing, making Xbox Live completely pointless. I just keep getting “Can’t retrieve information try again later, code: 8007274c.” SO…how do I fix this moderate NAT thing? Help would be amazing. Definitely do not have the money for the ridiculous $100 adapter.

Mine was working perfectly after following this tutorial a month ago. Then tonight I tried to connect and it failed. Sadtimes.

After lots of fiddling it worked, although I’m still getting the NAT error so would appreciate help on that (I don’t get the NAT error if I .

Use terminal and ifconfig en0 to get your ip address, use system prefs->network->airport->tcp/ip->router to get that address if you need it, but for the gateway I have found it better to use the inet address from terminal. Use this same address for Prim and Sec DNS.

    So my settings are:
IP address 192.168.2.8 (the 8 is because there are lots of devices on my network)
    Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
    Gateway 192.168.2.1

    Primary DNS Server 192.168.2.1
    Secondary DNS Server 192.168.2.1

NOTE ALSO that these settings didn’t work until I had a) restarted my router (could be coincidental) b) turned off internet sharing and turned on again and c) ONLY selecting Ethernet in the sharing preferences NOT ethernet adaptor en3

Hope this is helpful (and keeps working…)

Alright, so I got everything to work after a while. my biggest problem was the DNS passing (as was the problem for most of you). The problem i found was: when i opened my terminal i got two nat areas. And i was putting in the first one into my ip address which was wrong, i needed to put the second one (which was easily recognized as simpler numbers: the one i was using was like 192.255.239.143 or something like that, and the one below it was 192.168.2.1 mucchh easier)
After that, using that simpler number for my dns, it worked. But now im running into the problem a lot of other people are having: the NAT type issue.

If someone, anyone, can post a walkthrough for the NAT from moderate to open, I would love you forever. And probably send you like a bag of skittles in the mail.
    Not really.
But maybe email a pic of skittles.

You can email me if you prefer, —->> Timzig94@aol.com
Or post a reply on here.

If I get an email, i will repost on here so that everyone else can get the same help.
    Thanks!

Okay, I am getting the same can’t connect to the internet error. I am running 10.6.2.
I followed the tips on the machints link that keeps being posted, and i’ve insured that the number stayed at 0, and didn’t default back to 4. I tried my subnet and router addresses are completely different, so they shouldn’t be causing any conflict. Also most of the tutorials have been for earlier mac versions, where the user interfaces are hard to follow. so if anyone has any suggestions specific to mac os x 10.6.2 that would be great

    IP address: 192.168.2.2

Just deactivate and activate the internet sharing in your system preferences. That should do the trick. Otherwise try to disable the ipv6 configuration in your network Settings for your airport connection. I’ve done these 2 things and it is working again.

  182. Chris Heuer on May 22nd, 2010 7:04 pm

I just discovered a little glitch in how internet sharing was turned on that seems to be the source of all my woes with regards to getting it to connect to the internet.

Unless you see the dialog box that asks for “Are you sure you want to turn on Internet Sharing”, you are not really sharing the internet connection. I went through every possible DNS, and every IP change, and I can tell you that this does work.

    A few key highlights.

    – for DNS, use the IP address returned from running the terminal command cat /etc/resolv.conf – using an Apple TimePort, this is generally 10.0.1.1 – if you have a linksys, this is likely to be 192.168.1.1 unless you have changed it yourself

    – for the manual IP address, use a different set of numbers – for mine, where my DNS was 10.0.1.1, I chose to use 192.168.2.1 for the manual IP address of my ethernet connection, which was different then the airport IP address of my macbook which was 10.0.1.12

So what was happening is that I thought I was turning on the Internet sharing, and it never really stuck – meaning, I would go back and look at it in the preferences pane and it was off. So I finally turned all sharing off and then turned it back on and I was given the “are you sure” prompt. Once I got this and clicked yes, it worked perfectly.

    Hi
I used this method for about 6 months and got great xbox live.
One day, I pulled my laptop while the cable was still connected. Next time I tried to go on live, the connection would fail from Xbox 360 to Network, which convinced me I had one of three problems: I damaged the cable, I damaged the xbox ethernet port, I damaged my laptop ethernet port. I got a new cable, it still didnt work, so its either the xbox 360 or my macbook. Any suggestions?
    thanks!

Here is an idea……BUY THE NEW XBOX 360 SLIM! Built in wifi people! and if you trade in all your stuff from your old xbox you could end up paying only $100! Plus its got many great new features. For those of you with an old Xbox, I strongly recommend it as it hits american stores this week.

If you really don’t want to do this here is my fix (and a story)…I live right on the water and I was woken up one day by my mom. She said we had to evacuate there might be a tsunami coming! So I got all my stuff and went to a friend’s house uphill. I had my xbox and my computer and since we were there a few days, i tried to hook up xbox live. I just changed the ip address and it wouldn’t work, so i told my self to forget it and reset to my old details. When I got home, everything was how it used to be, but…i couldn’t connect to the internet! OMG! Anyways…i entered this……i went into system prefs>network>ethernet and set the ip and gateway to enter manually. I set the ip to 192.168.2.1 or whatever your ip is and the gateway to 255.000.000.000. I then went onto my xbox and typed in my ip for both dns things. Now i have 4 bar connection and moderate nat. I can download anything i want, but im getting the new xbox soon (its my birthday) and i just wanted to share this info.

Awesome tutorial, worked first time and has had no flaws.

The only thing is that ZUNE movie downloads seem to take way longer than any xbox live updates or game demos. Could be because it’s on a diff server, would that have anything to do with port forwarding etc?

  200. sam on August 2nd, 2010 11:44 am

Hi there, really interresting option, however my problem is a bit more difficult :D

I’ve done the same steps as you in the beginning:

    - Using my macbook pro to caputre a WiFi-Signal and broadcasting it to the ethernet cable.

However there I did connect a Airport express instead of a computer which is broadcasting it’s own wifi.

So far my airport recognizes the connection to the computer and my other notebook finds the wifi of the airport express. so everything is “in order”.

however when I try to use the internet its just searching and not displaying anything (on the macbook pro it works fine).

I’ll give you the configurations now and would be really happy if you have any suggestion:

    Macbook pro (using DHCP)
    IP 192.168.1.25
    Subnet 255.255.255.0
    Router 192.168.1.1
    DNS: 192.168.1.1; 62.42.63.52; 62.42.230.24

    Outgoing port: 192.168.2.1

    Airport incoming (manual):
    IP: 192.168.2.2
    Subnet 255.255.255.0
    Router: 192.168.2.1
    DNS: 192.168.1.25; 192.168.1.25

    Airport Outgoing (DHCP):
    10.0.1.1 – 10.0.1.254

    2nd Notebook (DHCP):
    IP 10.0.1.2
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    router: 10.0.1.1
    DNS: 10.0.1.1; 192.168.1.25; 192.168.1.1; 62.42.63.52; 62.42.230.24

Especially with the DNS I’m really unsecure but I tried several options.

whats your opinion, is such a build up even possible or no?

  201. Joey B. on August 7th, 2010 10:19 pm

  202. Isaac on August 10th, 2010 9:30 am

If anyone is still having the problem getting the internet to connect (because of the DNS error)…. Just enter the DNS from the computer you are tethering the connection to. So on your mac go into internet settings and see what the primary and secondary DNS is set as. Then just enter those into your xbox’x DNS settings.

  203. zeb on August 10th, 2010 2:27 pm

So our friend isaac finally is able to explain this. If there is dns troubles then follow the first post except set your primary and seconday dns’s to what ever you put in system prefs network ethernet dns server. If you leave it blank the adress will be all 0′s

  207. Jake on September 1st, 2010 7:58 pm

I was curious if anyone found a fix for the NAT configuration problem. I see that others have had it as well, with the configuration showing up as moderate instead of open. We have two xbox 360′s in my home, one that connects via a wireless adapter and one that I connect to the internet through my laptop (which I was able to do thanks to this tutorial). For some reason, the wireless adapter one connects fine with an open NAT, but the one through my laptop remains a moderate NAT. Any possible hints or solutions or anything at all? I would fall madly in love with you and shower you with inappropriate contact if you did. ;)

  208. David on September 1st, 2010 8:33 pm

    @Jake
Unfortunately there is no fix for this problem. It is a result of using a laptop to connect your xbox to the internet. You receive a moderate NAT type because your connection is being translated through two levels; your laptop and your router. Going directly to the router is the only way to get an open NAT type, because it’s then only one level of processing. But in my experience I haven’t had a problem having a moderate NAT, so it still isn’t worth it to me to buy a wireless adapter to fix it. Though I can’t say it doesn’t bother me…
Anyway, hope this saves you the wasted time trying things to fix it. :]

  209. Jake on September 1st, 2010 9:12 pm

@David, you have crushed my dreams. No, I’m kidding. I appreciate you letting me know. I kind of figured that was more or less the issue, but I was hoping there was a way around it. The only reason it’s a problem I want to fix is because I want to connect with some friends who are stuck behind a strict NAT connection (at college) and I can’t unless I have an open NAT. It’s not a serious problem, as I have the other xbox that has an open NAT, but it would be nice since I use the one through my laptop more often.

Perhaps I can pose this question and see if anyone knows. I have an extra router no longer in use since I recently purchased a better one for our home network. I was thinking maybe I could use the router and hook it up to the xbox and connect to the wireless that way. Possible? Any suggestions?

I’ve tried entering my router IP, my computer’s IP, and the DNS numbers from the TCP/IP info on my mac but nothing’s worked.
I’m in a college dorm that is entirely wireless-n with WPA2 enterprise (which my new 360 slim conveniently doesn’t seem to support, it can’t even see the network.)

does anyone know how to do it wit an adapter??

  222. Degan on October 8th, 2010 12:18 am

I got it to work for a while and now its refusing to connect. No matter what I do or how many times I redo it it says Your DNS server can’t resolve the names of the Xbox live servers or Xbox.com

Heres my info and what I have set up:
    Inet: 169.254.31.46
    Router: 192.168.1.1

What I have iun settings is:
    Ip address: 169.254.31.47
    Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 169.254.31.46

    DNS (Primary and secondary)
    192.168.2.1

    (Also tried 192.168.1.1)

What am I doing wrong? How do I fix this?

  223. azazazazazazazzzzzzza on October 9th, 2010 6:26 pm

p.s. how do u forward the port to make the NAT open?

Connect to XBOX LIVE through mac

    Mac Settings
    Manually
    Ip: 10.0.0.1
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Turn internet sharing with ethernet on…( I’m sure you have seen the videos…when they frustratingly don’t work for you???)

    Xbox settings
    Ip: 10.0.0.2
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 10.0.0.1

DNS settings on xbox(always the problem)
    Primary : Routers IP address found at:(System preferences – Network – Airport – Advanced – TCP/IP – Router)
Secondary: Your Internet Service providers DNS address can be found by doing the following:
Terminal – Enter this: cat /etc/resolv.conf
then the number you want will be next to the second ‘Namesever’ Line
Enter that in Secondary Dns on the Xbox 360, then try your connection.

Hope this helps anyone else still struggling.

  232. rich on November 9th, 2010 3:49 pm

does this slow the connection at all? between the router to Mac? or Mac to xbox?

  233. Emir Skalonja on November 9th, 2010 5:03 pm

    Rich,

recently I have learned that the only way to establish the connection to xbox live and keep it is to go from your internet provider directly to your xbox. for example, i have time warner cable wireless internet service. i connect my xbox via ethernet cord to the router. trust me it is the only way to have live without buying the wireless adapter for your xbox. i’ve been fighting with the mac and DNS errors for the past month. it does not work. the reason why everyone gets and error or slow connection is because macs are obviously not compatible with microsoft.

  234. Scot P on November 10th, 2010 1:03 am

I have followed all of these different instructions, and the xbox live connection works fine. Today I bought CoD Black Ops but cant connect to a number of games.

Has anyone been able to find out how to get an OPEN NAT when connected through a mac mini/wireless connection? My setup is this: xbox connected to mac mini via ethernet cable. Internet sharing, web sharing on, and connected wireless to Verizon FiOS router. I have even gotten into the router settings to try to DMZ, but no luck.

Please help to explain how to get an OPEN NAT with the above setup. Thanks.

After hours of research, and time on the phone with xbox, apple, and my internet provider my son is playing online right now via my imacs internet sharing. You have to find the ip address of your mac’s internal router. Tricky. Noticed many of you are not getting the ip address after typing ifconfig en0. The instructions I followed were slightly different, and worked like a charm! So heres what you do:

    Turn on Internet sharing:
select the network you want to share and share it via airport and give your network a name… set up a 5 digit WEP key if you want protection.

open terminal and type ifconfig en1
This will give you your router number, mine was 10.0.2.1, it will be listed next to the word inet
next type dig, this will give you your ISP’s DNS numbers (at the very bottom, next to the word server)

On your PS3 open the network settings, scan for your new network, enter the WEP key and configure the IP manually.

Under IP type the router number but add a digit to the last number, in other words, my router was 10.0.2.1, so I assigned my PS3 the IP 10.0.2.2
use the standard subnet mask of 255.255.0.0
enter the router number you found (10.0.2.1)
enter the DNS numbers found earlier.

    MTU = Auto
Proxy Server = Do Not Use
UPnP = doesnt make a difference

and thats it, your done… im using my PS3 with my 3G mobile broadband shared via airport.

EDIT: After a PM I realised I completely left out the Airport settings part.

In Airport settings under TCP/IP select configure IPv4 via DHCP, and under DNS add your ISP’s DNS numbers that you found earlier.

For those not familiar with any of this, Internet sharing is found in the sharing folder in System Preferences. Enable sharing your internet via ethernet to computers using airport ect. Airport settings are found in the network folder in System Preferences. Click on Airport and then advanced. The terminal folder is in the Utilities folder found in Applications.
    Good Luck!!!

It worked for me this way. In the network settings, i selected “Ethernet” then i saw that the Subnet mask was not 255.255.255.0 it was 255.255.0.0, and the DNS-server was way different from my routers IP, so tried changing the DNS settings(primary and secondary) in the xbox to the DNS settings i saw before, and changed the subnet mask in the IP settings on xbox to 255.255.0.0, and then it worked :-)

Or would i even be able to plug that device directly into the back of the xbox??

  272. Bobby on March 18th, 2011 1:58 pm

For everyone that cannot figure this out it took me a couple days but I got it finally. My XBox is hooked to my Mac Book Pro through ethernet using wireless to get internet. I am in Iraq doing this so if it is possible here on a shared router it is possible anywhere. Just email me or message me. Chickun381@aim.com or find me on facebook. Bobby Bond. I will be happy to help answer questions.

You can find your DSN numbers in the network preferences under DSN. You have to make sure that your ethernet connection is turned on manual in your computer as well as your XBox. Set your ethernet to the same manual number as your computer the 192.168.2.1 will also be the number for your ethernet manual ISP. This should correct your issues. If you have questions please don’t hesitate to let me know and I will walk you through it.

Thank you for sharing its a worth while to read.I must say, as significantly as I enjoyed reading what you had to say, I couldn’t help but lose interest after a while. Its as if you had a wonderful grasp around the subject matter, but you forgot to include your readers. Perhaps you should think about this from far more than one angle. Or maybe you shouldn’t generalize so substantially. Its better if you think about what others may have to say instead of just going for a gut reaction to the subject. Think of about adjusting your own thought process and giving others who may read the benefit of the doubt.

This makes connecting a mac with an xbox 360 seam so easy when in fact it isn’t,personally it drives me mad,I use ethernet cables as I don’t have wireless and a box where all the cables meet,I can have either my mac online or my xbox, not both,I never had any problems with the original xbox, but sharing the network with a 360 is a nightmare and neither my internet provider or xbox have an answer and everything talked about it on the internet assumes you are using airport and snow leopard,I use a Emac running tiger and have virtually given up.

Well I have read other peoples posts and tried everything, maybe it depends on what mac and operating system you are using,I don’t know, but nothing works,as I said before I can have either my xbox online or my mac,not both at the same time,if I previously had my xbox online then want to go on my mac,I have to pull out the modem for a moment switch off the xbox, then switch on the mac, then I can connect to the internet no problem, then when I want to use my xbox,I do the same thing again but in reverse.

It seems to me that either the mac or the xbox realizes what you are trying to do after a while and shuts it down promptly. since then i have spent hours trying to sample all of you guys’ configurations, but to no avail.     For anyone having the issue where you were recently able to connect to XBOX Live, and for some reason now you’re not (even though the settings have remained the same); Try this;
Go to System Preferences < Sharing <

And disable than enable "Internet Connection Sharing" 6 or so times. Make sure to do it more then once even if you haven't previously tried a solution like this.

Sharing makes no difference,I have tried it a dozen times, microsoft do it to be awkward to mac users.

  294. mobistealth on July 23rd, 2011 5:39 pm

Yeah, Follow the 4th comment. I did and it worked! Thanks!

  295. Karl on July 24th, 2011 9:40 am

Sharing doesn't work when using the new xbox model, the easiest way is to have either one online at a time, all you do is reset the modem every time, micro soft being an awkward company and anti mac have made this happen on purpose,so you can only have one online at once.

  296. Eric C on July 30th, 2011 2:04 pm

You don't have to do any of this if you're running OSX 10.7, Lion.
Just set  to automatic on the xbox side for ip and DNS and share airport to ethernet on the Mac.
That's it! I just upgraded to Lion today and about freaked out when my xbox wasn't connecting.

  297. Karl on August 5th, 2011 7:04 am

Well not everyone is running Lion and not everyone always wants the latest thing as and when it comes out.

    YES :) IT WORKED

  300. Jake on August 21st, 2011 12:55 am

ok guys, i used a different tut to set this up and it worked for about a month. all of a sudden, it just stopped working. i tried tons of different tuts (including this one) and they just didn’t work anymore. I figured maybe all of the different settings i’ve put in before might be conflicting so i went to the additional settings tab and restored the network settings to the factory defaults, in the process setting everything to automatic. After being set to automatic it connected! maybe it only worked for me but if nothing works, try restoring to factory defaults

thanks for you info. i’ve been trying for a long time to get my xbox to run from internet sharing on my imac running 10.6.8. i’m in a wheelchair and had not had anyone help me hook it directly with an ethernet cord, but i just got it working by using your tutorial and the info from my ipod. i went into settings on my ipod, went into wi-fi and substituted the info in there to where you put them in the xbox and now i enjoying xbox live. thanks. i hope this helps people that can use an ipod though their wi-fi, but not their xbox.

    useful information about internet sharing

  306. Arts on November 4th, 2011 7:54 pm

I was manually setting the ip of the ethernet adapter on my mac, to force the subnet ip, but no luck. Seems like the mac generates the subnet and only shares the connection through that subnet. In my case it was 192.168.2.0 as well.

    Thanks!

  311. kean on December 27th, 2011 11:06 pm

i followed the original instructions and it worked for awile now when i try to connect to the internet it says “your manually configured DNS settings may not be correct”

  312. kean on December 28th, 2011 2:20 am

it worked before but i cant seem to figure it out no one els seems to have found a solution to this problem

  313. Karl on December 28th, 2011 8:52 am

The problem only affects the slim console connected to the internet via an ethernet cable,as with me I can either have my emac online or my xbox, not both, but when staying with friends who have a wireless system my xbox 360 slim connects no problem at all, micro soft being the typically short sighted company it is didn’t think that not all users would have WI-FI,so it you want an xbox online trouble free I advise people to buy the older console the elite or the core forget the slim.

  314. kean on December 28th, 2011 4:31 pm

so i figured my problem out for the dns error “your manually configured DNS settings may not be correct” all i did was turn off my internet sharing on my mac via airport to ethernet, then i turned it back on and for some reason that fixed my problem. so my theory is that because i disconnected my mac from my xbox for about 5 days i just needed to reboot the sharing.

  315. jacob on December 31st, 2011 12:03 am

Okay, so I get past Xbox 360 then when I get to network it wont work, it gives me this message. Your console has these manually-defined DNS settings:
    Primary DNS: 192.168.1.1
    Secondary DNS: 192.168.1.1
    at the top it says
Your DNS server can’t resolve the names of the xbox live servers or Xbox.com
What do I do, Heres what Xbox 360 I have- Xbox 360 4GB slim, I am not using Wifi

  316. Karl on December 31st, 2011 8:15 am

Dear Jacob, like I said previously the slim xbox is a bugger to use online unless you have a wireless system,I have the 250GB model and basically I got my settings from my mac,I used Onyx for my settings, but you can get them from system preferences on your mac,if you get it roughly right the xbox should work, but the computer won’t,it’s a question of what is more important to be online,it’s just a matter of trial and error and a lot of patience, personally unless you want to play online with others or down load content the hassle isn’t worth it especially as you have such a small hard drive.

  317. Scott on January 12th, 2012 2:14 pm

    Hey everyone,

Figured out the problem. do everything that’s stated above in the original post, however, for the subnet you should input “255.255.0.0″ this worked right away for my mac and hopefully it will for your computer. I’m using ethernet>mac>xbox 360 in order to connect to xbox live.

    Good luck
