Seconded, Tom. The ads were irritating; I was upset on the same principles you mentioned. But I have entered a bunch of custom items, I have saved lists and time invested in the app, so I've stuck with it perhaps a little longer than you.

They broke me with version 8. It is practically unusable for all its bloat. It does too much, and the core functionality I loved it for is buried amidst this bloat. The app barks at me about these features I don't care about, and products I am not interested in, and I have to pay a subscription fee to turn that off. No sir, no thank you.

You no longer e-mail the developer directly. My last exchange with Support resulted in form responses that did not address my concerns, saying only that my suggestions were "added to the feature request list." Actually, I asked a question... I guess the answer is "find another app, buddy."

I switched to Groceries by Sophiestication Software. It's $1.99. The built-in item database seems to be larger than Shopper's, although some common items are branded with brands I don't recognize. This is what Shopper was, three or four versions ago; and it looks pleasingly like paper on cork-board. The only thing I miss is sale-tracking; and all that ever did was trigger impulse purchases.

I can't recommend anyone buy this app.

When it first came out, it was 4.99, it now sells for .99, but is still a paid app and anyone who bought it prior to the latest version, no matter what they paid, had bought an ad free app.

With the latest upgrade though, the company has inserted ads into the app and is charging 1.99 a year to get rid of the ads on top of whatever you paid for the app in the first place.

To charge people for an app and then tell them they need to pay again yearly to get rid of ads is bad enough. To insert ads into a paid app that has been ad free since its inception is plain bad business and makes them a company I wouldn't trust at all.

I would recommend you send them a message and take your business to a more reputable company.

the best app in it's kind!

Mark, the developer, is very kind and responsive indeed. When version 3 was released I asked for the previous "yellow" layout to be reintroduced as an option and... he promptly did in 3.0.1 :-) :-)

Shopper is one of my most-used iPhone apps, and I have to agree 100% that the developer has been remarkably responsive. He's added a ton of features, and continues to push out regular updates. Glad to see a good review for this app.
