I wouldn’t change permissions there, as it’s always a bad idea to make things behave like they aren’t supposed to do. (After all doing this you would generate an error that could maybe fill quickly a huge error log somewhere else , console or other).

What you can find in ~/Library/caches it’s the avatars cache. So, based on your messaging amount, just delete it every now and then. You can also schedule a cleanup of that folder via the good “lingon” software (http://tuppis.com/lingon/).

in Yahoo! messenger preferences unchecking “show the last x messages ” really makes a difference on the time needed to open a new chat with someone.

It’s incredible how much of a difference it makes when I delete the cache for Yahoo! Messenger. A way to disable it would be awesome!

Do you think blocking the app from accessing the file might do any good? I could change permissions of that file.

I’d add these things:

1. fix permissions every month or two (wrong permissions sometimes makes background apps ramp the CPU usage up)

2. clear your home/caches and /Library/Caches and reboot (this may speed up some softwares like instant messengers and such – do it every two months)

3. if you have a folder you frequently use keep it to < 800 item counts (i.e. download folder). If you have download folder in the dock, keep it to <20 items.

4. Safari: shorten history persistence to 1 day or two, rss persistance to 1 week

5. messengers (yahoo, msn, adium..): don’t save conversations history or uncheck the option to show the last few messages from past conversations.

Give a little more detail on the Leopard desktop icons thing. How do you know anything changed? Can you provide some links?
