“Keep an eye on the Activity Monitor” – This is a nice way. I have tried before. I would like to follow other tips and see if those work on my old old mac. BTW, I like to mention a dvd to ipad converter. This is a program that helps us watching DVD movies on iPad. You might need it.

Really amazing tips to boost the speed of Mac but the tips may not work well in the cases where there is large amount of Duplicate files or lots of unnecessary craps in the machine, for all these case one very interesting crap remover tool for mac can be used http://www.drivetoolbox.com/crap-remover.php

Totally awesome….i am still amazed at the great info i come accross on the web….thanks. it is really help for me. when you put a DVD into your DVD driver and load it , i found use some software such as dvd ripper for mac ,the speed is much faster then you just wait the computer to load , which is time consuming and annoying.

I wouldn’t change permissions there, as it’s always a bad idea to make things behave like they aren’t supposed to do. (After all doing this you would generate an error that could maybe fill quickly a huge error log somewhere else , console or other).

What you can find in ~/Library/caches it’s the avatars cache. So, based on your messaging amount, just delete it every now and then. You can also schedule a cleanup of that folder via the good “lingon” software (http://tuppis.com/lingon/).

in Yahoo! messenger preferences unchecking “show the last x messages ” really makes a difference on the time needed to open a new chat with someone.

It’s incredible how much of a difference it makes when I delete the cache for Yahoo! Messenger. A way to disable it would be awesome!

Do you think blocking the app from accessing the file might do any good? I could change permissions of that file.

I’d add these things:

1. fix permissions every month or two (wrong permissions sometimes makes background apps ramp the CPU usage up)

2. clear your home/caches and /Library/Caches and reboot (this may speed up some softwares like instant messengers and such – do it every two months)

3. if you have a folder you frequently use keep it to < 800 item counts (i.e. download folder). If you have download folder in the dock, keep it to <20 items.

4. Safari: shorten history persistence to 1 day or two, rss persistance to 1 week

5. messengers (yahoo, msn, adium..): don’t save conversations history or uncheck the option to show the last few messages from past conversations.
