News: Apple is Prepared for the iPhone 3.0 Release Tomorrow
UPDATE: OS 3.0 is now available for download through iTunes.
The long awaited update to the iPhone OS is coming tomorrow, June 17th, and it looks as though Apple is very much prepared.
Find My iPhone, a feature allowing you to find your iPhone via MobileMe if you were to lose it, has been available online for developers who are already running OS 3.0 since the announcement, last week. 
But just a few moments ago, I noticed something in the App Store which I’m pretty sure wasn’t there before. Apple is now listing “iPhone OS 3.0 Tested” next to the version number of what seems to be all new applications. This message also appears next to all updates as well, further proving that Apple is making sure most of the applications available to consumers will work on the new OS.
Be sure to check back later this week for further coverage on iPhone OS 3.0 and the iPhone 3GS.

it would be released at midnight either est or pst they wouldnt release at midnight each timezone. if its midnight pst then that would be 3am est or 2am central

yes if you’re wanting to un-jailbrake your iPhone, you should be able to update it as normal….
You may however have to do a restore to 3.0… but that’s not a big deal. It’s essentially the same thing.
tyler you have to restore to factory setting to get the update, itunes wont allow updates to alternate firmware anymore, quick pwn also has a cracked version for 3.0, download it after the update… best way to go

“contacting iPhone update server” just popped up when i clicked on check for update on iTunes then nothing happened for 2 or 3 sec’s then it popped up with v 2.2 is current. i never saw that before… anyone else

It would seem like they’d want to do it before the 7 or 8 am that they’ve done it in the past so that the servers don’t get bogged down by people downloading it right then because they’re expecting it. I’m staying up until 3, but if it’s not up by then I’ll just get it in the morning. I’m in EST.

nick, i think youll be locked without service, but im not 100% sure. 1:12 am central, with nothing. for those who said it was 8 am last year (central) for 2.0, thats not true because i left at 4:00 am (set my alarm for 3:30 am and it was up, central again) to wait in line for the 3g. while i waited in line i played some apps from the app store, so i can gaurantee you last year it was up sometime shortly after (or exactly) midnight pacific but no later then 1:30 pacific.

Nick… if you update an unLocked iPhone, it will not be unlocked anymore. You will have to go thru the process again. I haven’t hacked my iPhone since 2.0 came out, but if 3.0 hasn’t been hacked yet, then you don’t be able to use your phone with your current carrier until the hack it available.
If you’re unsure, your best bet is to wait and let other people make the mistake before you get screwed.

ok backup your iphone as your downlaoding…then when it finishes…on itunes hit restore then select the file you downlaoded…iphone1,2 7a34DONT PANIC) then it flashes to the apple screen then loads up
My concern with a torrent would be that I’d get a virus disguised as or attached to the GM, then the update would be released 5 minutes later as my computer was shooting blood from its usb ports.
If you intendend on the release date as of June 17th you should release the new update . June 17th starts at 12:00am If thats not when you intend on release time dont get our hopes up! These updates are very important to the user of the Iphone. thanks

when you select 3.0 from restore it will seem like a brand new phone with nothing on it…the restore from backup will just put your contacts and pics in the phone…keeping in mind you lose your music and apps.

“Apple is located on the west coast, so the earliest you’ll see 3.0 go live is 3:00 am eastern time” It’s exactly what I thought.
I work for apple iphone and the software will not be released till tomorrow am 6am west coast time you should be able to start downloading 3.0 from itunes.
Apple never posts release times, I have noticed they launch mid morning to avoid an extreme server load, so people will download it as they get up and with the time zones it will help even out the server load.
I’m assuming it will be released at 12:00:01 AM PT, due to Apple HQ being in Cupertino, CA.
When I rang O2 in the UK earlier the man said the update was probably going to be online at 6pm (BST), 5pm (GMT)!

Apple has decided to make a last minute change to the iPhone OS 3.0 release date and now the software will be released on June 18 due to unknown reasons. Nobody knows yet why Apple delayed the iPhone OS 3.0 Software Update, but it better be a good damn reason. iPhone users have been waiting for this and a delay is not good, not good at all. If the iPhone OS 3.0 is ready, why wasn’t it released? We should stop complaining as we know that Apple will not make it available sooner, but hopefully they will not delay it until the launch of the iPhone 3G S.

im in the UK and i just spoke to an o2 representative and they said its going to be released 6pm uk time. o2 is uk network provider for iphone.
the date changed in my iTunes to the 24th of June and it says the 2.2.1 is up to date

i did the same thing last night when i noticed a bunch of idiots who thought they would get access to the update 3 hours earlier because they were on the east coast thinking it would be release at midnight
it will be release to everyone at 3pm pst, 6pm est.

believe what you want, but im not one of the idiots who did countdowns at 12am, 1am, 2am, and 3am..then woke up and did another one at 7am, 8am, 9am, 10am, 11am, and 12pm. I woke up and calmly called them, and they said the average release time is expected to be around 1pm Eastern Standard Time today. My co-worker is on Apples “Gold List” I think they called it, so I was playing around with his 3.0 phone earlier. It’s got a bunch of cool features but it’s definitely not worth all these countdowns, my god. Go do something with your life, it will be here when you come back.

I’ve been out all day, having at at my laptop firstly from midnight for two hours then again from 7am, just come back at 5.30pm and there is still no freaking update available. Latest news on the o2 website in the UK states it will be avialble ‘this evening’, so could be anytime from 6pm iIguess.
Am I the only one getting a sneaking feeling that maybe this isn’t happening today?

Internet Tethering isn’t showing up in my settings.
Voice Control isn’t working.
The Maps application doesn’t allow me to do the compass thing (tap the blue where am I button and show my direction…. though that could be an iphone 3gS thing only)
that’s all I’ve found so far… but I really wanted those first 2.
I think i’m gonna back everything up… which it gonna take 10 freak’n hours…. and then do a complete restore and just start from a fresh copy. then I can send over the apps I use most often anyhow.
This is really frustrating.
My installation was perfect.
I’ve run the installation on iPhone and I took a 55min walk.
When I came back the installation andfirst run was set.
i had no such luck… and I usually don’t have any issues… I don’t what happened. And I was sitting here watching it the whole time as I’m in the office working and can’t really go anywhere.
I’m just gonna restore this beast and hope for the best this time.
I found the activation servers are down, however once the OS 3.0 was installed everything worked fine. I had to wait about 30 minutes until the iphone syned up properly, 2nd phone only took about 10 minutes.
For tethering i downloaded a profile through safari, worked great. When i finally did get the iphone to sync up it downloaded a new profile and that i guess overwrites it and all is still good.
I’m awed by the tethering app, i have multiple laptops and makes working on the road easy. I could have gone with the USB rocket, however with this and a 6 Gig data plan it is all i really require.
I didn’t think I was a dumb ass…. but I apparently am not figuring some of this out properly.
So I have now restored my phone, iPhone 3G, to factory settings… and it is setup with a clean copy of 3.0, straight from iTunes.
First off… when I hold the home button down, I can’t get “voice connect” to work. That was one of the features that I was interested in using.
Second, when I go to Setting -> General -> Network there’s nothing there about Internet Tethering. On the website it says that it’s supposed to have an “On/Off” switch there. Still no dice though.
Any help is much appreciated.

Im pretty sure apple just released a polished version of 3.0 GM BETA. maybe in a week we’ll have a more complete update? I dont know… I’m talking out of my ass

alright… so I just got off the phone with apple tech support and they said that Internet Tethering and MMS is on the phone, but the features have been turned off by the carrier and will be turned on once AT&T get everything set up.
As far as Voice Connect goes… that’s a 3Gs Feature and will not work on the 3G phone. YAY!
I guess if I want those features I’m gonna have to get the Gold Masters Version.

if you install another carrier file thats around the internet you can activate mms and tethering. I did not got the mms to work but at least I got tethering

jailbreak is different from UNLOCKED that is Ultrasnow…….the Dev-Team said that they would release quickpwn right after apple release the OS and the unlock is due friday to make sure apple does not change anything to the 3G S and see if the Ultrasnow works also with the S

Downloaded 3.0 on two iphones.
MMS working flawlessly.
Tethering working flawlessly on both a desktop PC at home, and a Sony Vaio laptop while driving my son to lacrosse. This is an awesome added feature i plan to take advantage of with my 6 Gig data plan.
