MobileMe Going Free?
I am an avid user of MobileMe. I love the push calendar, contacts and email, iDisk, Find My iPad, iPhone and iPod, putting up photos and documents and presentations to be shared with my friends, family and colleagues. I just completely love it. Whats the only thing that bites? The $99 subscription fee, which in itself isnt too bad and doest really bother me given that it is applied annually. Speaking of which, we here at MacApper have been hearing a little rumor that has been beginning to make its way around the Internet. Word has it that the MobileMe web software is anticipated to become free of charge.
People familiar with the matter state that Apple will be waiving service charges if certain actions that are under development become deployed. The most, and probably obvious development being referred to is Apples massive new datacenter that is stationed in North Carolina, Maiden, North Carolina that is. Prior to MobileMe, Apple has had predecessors to the service (..sort of). iTools, in particular, was one of the service back in the day that Apple offered for free to customers.
Apart from Apple, a few other organizations have offered alternatives to MobileMes functions. One, for instance, is Google. With Google Sync, as they so would appropriately dub it, users of Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Contacts could sync all their information with their iPhone devices over the air by setting up a Microsoft Exchange account that can be set up right on the iPhone.
While Google Sync is definitely not an equal to MobileMe, it does provide some of the features that MobileMe entails, such as the contact, calendars and email synchronization. However, Most people have resulted to these alternative. Sole culprit of that is the MobileMe price-tag thats attached. Most people bark at the $99 yearly annual fee and divert to other means. With this new information, though, and the rapid development of Apples North Carolina data farm, They might very well deem the MobileMe service complementary.
A while back on YouTube, MacRumors found footage of the huge Apple database in North Carolina, providing some intriguing footage and shots. If you wanna take a gander at the site yourself. Click the image below.

You don’t actually pay $99 right? You know that you can get it for around $70 on amazon (maybe other places as well..?)? I’ve done this the past two years. You buy it online and then enter the serial in Mobile Me to tack on a year.
If it’s going to be free I’ll even take the undoubtedly added iAds in stride.
One tiny point, I would never bark at something I found expensive, but I would most assuredly balk at the idea.
Of course, your milage may vary
I love Apple products but “Mobile Me” free……. who started that silly rumor?
Hhmmm! I would balk at MobileMe being free for one reason – free things are always too expensive in one way or another. And that applies whether the ‘free’ thing comes from the government or from Google. Someone must pay for any service, and if I am to use the service, I prefer to do the paying. That way I have some control over it. Free Service Problems: I have seen them changed or even discontinued sometimes without notice; the security is abominable (I once had a Yahoo! mailbox hacked); pay services are simply more attractive to use as the vendor must put more thought into the service if he wants to attract customers. I don’t mind paying for what I use, in fact I prefer it. I am afraid that if MobileMe goes ‘Free’ that it’s quality by necessity will diminish. I know there are a million arguments on the other side – and I respect your point of view. This is simply my opinion based on my experiences.
$99 a month does not seem to be expensive to me. That’s only $8.25 a month, basically an hour of work at close to minimum wage. Ergo, not expensive.
This is like the argument against xbox live membership. $50 a year ($4.16 a month) is not expensive.
For the value that Mobile Me brings (as well as Live for the matter), it is well worth the cost.
FREE-An Apple product/service free, will never happen!!!!!!
This will never happen. But if it does, i do feel that its going to SUX
Mobile me going free would be great, but I’m already quite accustomed to using Gmail and Google sync for all the push mail, contacts and calendar for iphone. For disk storage, dropbox provides a similar solution with 2GB free!
[...] om att detta relativt dyra paket med push, synktjänster och nätlagring, kan komma att bli en gratistjänst. MobileMe borde vara det kitt som håller ihop Apples plattformar, men för det krävs att [...]

Did everybody now when the update ios 4.3 for iphone4 comes?
There have been some rumors going about that Apple has pulled AirPrint from the final release of iOS 4.2. Apparently, a rumor came about yesterday claiming that Apple has axed the feature from the iOS 4.2 final release because of some unforeseen circumstances. Distraught by the speculated exemption of the features, a customer decided to shoot Steve Jobs a letter about it to get a further understanding of the matter. Steve replied saying that AirPrint has not been cut from the final version of the anticipated software update.
