MobileMe Mail is Getting a Facelift

Apple announced that it is going to be giving the MobileMe Mail web-app a makeover and it is personally giving users of the MobileMe service an invitation to use the new design of the web software while it is in beta.

MobileMe members can log onto me.com and opt-in to receive an invite for the beta. When you sign-in to MobileMe, you will be taken by default to the Mail app. Take a gander at the bottom right corner and you are going to see a message from Apple that looks like this¦

To opt-in, all you have to do is click the link in the message and thats it. Apple will notify you when the beta is ready to be tested by you.

Apple is going to be redesigning the entire Mail web-app interface, which much resembles what is seen on the iPhone OS. The new features include¦

¢ Widescreen + Compact Views ¢

Apple states that the new widescreen and compact views gives the users an option to see more of one piece of content with less scrolling and more of the content itself and also giving you the option to view more detail of multiple content at once.

“Widescreen view lets you see more of each message with less scrolling. Choose compact view to hide your folders or classic view to see more of your message list.”

¢ Mailbox Behavior ¢

The folks in Cupertino will also be adding support for mailbox behaviors, just like in the Mail application on the Mac. Users can sign-in to me.com and create, alter and manage mailbox behaviors that will correspond in the same manner on all their devices and computers synchronized with their MobileMe service.

Mail rules help you reduce inbox clutter by automatically filing messages into folders you select ahead of time. Set them up at me.com, and your rules organize your incoming email on the web and everywhere else — on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, and PC.

¢ One-Click Archiving ¢

Apple also mentions the addition of single-click archiving where the content will be stored in an area designated by the user for later use.

“Click the Archive button and the selected message is quickly filed into the Archive folder where it’s always available for future reference.”

¢ Formatting Toolbar ¢

The inclusion of a formatting toolbar allows the user to be creative when making new content. Options for italicizing, bolding, underlining, undo, print and more will be in the beta as well as a string of keyboard shortcuts for the user to complete tasks faster.

You can create great-looking email messages using formatting buttons to bold or italicize text, change font color, insert images, and more. You can even create formatted web links to hide long URLs.

¢ Improved Performance ¢

In the beta web-software, you will notice an improvement in speed in everything. Messages load noticeably faster, pictures rendering much quicker, messages send faster and the app all around will feel much snappier.

Mail at me.com loads your inbox and messages faster. And with interface refinements such as the ability to scroll through your entire inbox without having to manually click to load the next set of messages, you’ll be able to work more efficiently.

¢ Advanced Security with SSL ¢

Apple is putting a new padlock on mail in MobileMe with the implementation of SSL, solidifying the satisfaction that no one can view you content, even on an open network.

With the MobileMe Mail beta, accessing your email on the web is more secure than ever. Your inbox is protected to prevent anyone from eavesdropping on your webmail. As always, you receive SSL protection when you use your MobileMe Mail account on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, and PC.

Instead of playing around with how the email looks I wish Apple would concentrate instead on making iDisk work properly. That would be something worthwhile announcing.

There have been some rumors going about that Apple has pulled AirPrint from the final release of iOS 4.2. Apparently, a rumor came about yesterday claiming that Apple has axed the feature from the iOS 4.2 final release because of some unforeseen circumstances. Distraught by the speculated exemption of the features, a customer decided to shoot Steve Jobs a letter about it to get a further understanding of the matter. Steve replied saying that AirPrint has not been cut from the final version of the anticipated software update.
