Wi-Fi Sync Application Denied
A while back, we did a piece on an application that allowed the user to wirelessly sync their iDevice. The application achieved the same the results as using the typical method through the Dock Connector and connecting a device to a computer via USB. The developer made plans to submit the application to the App Store in hopes of it being approved and published for sale. However, just as MacRumors, AppleInsider, Gizmodo, Engadget and us here at MacApper pretty much forecasted, the application got the big NO instead of the big OK.
The developer of the application did state that he was pretty sure that he didnt violate any of the Apple iPhone OS Developer Agreement statutes, which the application didnt. However, just in-case of the likely event that Apple did stamp the app with a big red rejected stamp, he did initiate his plan B approach and made the application available to the citizens of the jail-breaking community by way Cydia. The app is available right now for $9.99.
The news isnt surprising to most being of the unorthodox constitution of the software, but some were actually hoping to be able to add wireless syncing to their iPhone OS device. We did get some emails from the questioners out their though. One in particular that we got a lot of is Well, thats really cool, but what would I use that for? A couple of scenarios we gave out there was that this would be useful for people who forget their Dock Connector in their car and need to sync to iTunes. This app would be convenient for you being that it prevents you from making a trip downstairs to the car to get your Dock Connector, especially if you are syncing new music to listen to in your car before you leave the house. Another instance given to readers is for those who are notorious of misplacing or abusing their components to their iDevices, such as the Apple headphones, USB power adapter and the Dock Connector. Particularly, if you misplace or damaged your DC to the point of no return and have to wait for Apple to send you a replacement (which they are usually very fast when sending out replacement parts through their warranty program, practically next-day delivery) or have to go to you nearest Apple Store and pick one up for 20 bucks, not only is this application convenient, its made for you.
Apple actually contacted 19 year-old Gregory Hughes, developer of the application, instead of sending the typical email that they usually do. In the phone conversation, an Apple representative said to him that the application reached high levels of discussion within the Apple organization, but ultimately, they had to stamp it NO.
“Apple called me yesterday and said it was being rejected. I had a good conversation with the guy there. He said it reached a very high level of escalation within the company, but they had to say ‘no’.”
Apple seemed very impressed about the application developed by the young man and continued to ask for his CV, mind you, Greg is only 19.
“It was cool to hear that from someone at Apple!”
The app requires you to install a software on your Mac or PC and be connected to the same Wi-Fi network so your iDevice can be discovered. The first initial sync require you to identified the device. Every sync after that, all you have to do is launch the app on your device and your computer automatically sees and mounts the device and syncs. As mentioned earlier, the app does accomplish the same effect as the Dock Connector does when connected to your machine, however, we dont know if it can accomplish a restore or update function. More than likely it cannot being that the iPhone would restart in a restore or update as part of the process, which would make the tech inside of the device, including the Wi-Fi radio thats needed for the app to work, inactive. Still though, this is a very handy thing to have on hand if you are apart of the jail-breaking community. We suggest if you have the ten dollars to spend, pick this up and take a look at it. It would be ideal if you are without a Dock Connector and need to do your everyday syncing method. Check out the video on YouTube to help make your final decision.

There have been some rumors going about that Apple has pulled AirPrint from the final release of iOS 4.2. Apparently, a rumor came about yesterday claiming that Apple has axed the feature from the iOS 4.2 final release because of some unforeseen circumstances. Distraught by the speculated exemption of the features, a customer decided to shoot Steve Jobs a letter about it to get a further understanding of the matter. Steve replied saying that AirPrint has not been cut from the final version of the anticipated software update.
