iOS 4.1 Coming Next Week Wednesday, iOS 4.2 Comes November

Apple introduced iOS 4.1 on Wednesday and we finally get see the facts of what the software really contains. First and foremost, the new software does indeed fix the proximity sensor issues and speeds up iOS on the iPhone 3G drastically. The new mobile software also activates Apple’s social gaming network Game Center, which a lot of people have been waiting for. In addition to those features, Apple also added a new feature that optimizes still image recording for the best possible photo. HDR, or High Dynamic Range, takes three shots of your photo, one that is over exposed, one that is under exposed and the original image that you would see when you take a photo with the iPhone (or new iPod touch). From their, following a set of algorithms, iOS develops the best possible picture from the three images recorded. The results, in a nutshell, are…well…dramatically better, detailing elements in the image that would be washed out by excessive light (we have some eye-candy for you below).

As an additional treat, Apple showcased the development of iOS 4.2 that will be available for the iPhone, iPod and iPad. iOS 4.2 brings a number of features that consumers have been drooling for. Probably the most requested thing that Apple has been getting in the mail room is native printing on the iPad. Well, the boys in Cupertino have given the people what they want. Apple has indeed included built-in printing drivers for not only the iPad, but the iPhone and iPod touch as well. Said devices will be able to interact with printers wirelessly and catalogs all oft printing jobs in the app switching interface of iOS. While we (or anyone else) have not been able to test this thing out, based on what we seen from the keynote, the function seems really easy to use.

iOS 4.1 is on schedule to be released next week Wednesday along with the new iPod lineup and Apple TV. 4.2 will be making it’s way to a iPad, iPhone or iPod near sometime in November.

Update

If you haven’t yet seen the keynote due to hardware and software reasons, Apple has posted the link for universal playback where you can watch the event.

There have been some rumors going vabout that Apple has pulled AirPrint from the final release of iOS 4.2. Apparently, a rumor came about yesterday claiming that Apple has axed the feature from the iOS 4.2 final release because of some unforeseen circumstances. Distraught by the speculated exemption of the features, a customer decided to shoot Steve Jobs a letter about it to get a further understanding of the matter. Steve replied saying that AirPrint has not been cut from the final version of the anticipated software update.
