Over Fifty Percent of Video in H.264 is Now HTML5

Mefreedia, a media search research firm, released some interesting data results this week detailing how strong the HTML5 movement, heavily influenced by Apple, is doing on the Net. The results presented showcase that over 50% (roughly 54% to be more precise) of video encoded with the H.264 video codec on the Net is available in HTML5. That’s double the share of what it was on the Web just under half a year ago. The cause for the transition in video is attributed the substantial boom of the mobile computing industry, led, of course, by Apple’s iOS mobile platform.

- 54% of web video is now available for playback in HTML5. Double in 5 months.

- Flash remains the dominant player within desktop environments.

- Mobile is driving HTML5 video adoption. HTML5 compatible (H.264 mostly) video is the most common format for mobiles (inc. iPhone, iPad and Android).

- Publishers & platforms now offer iframe embeds, allowing them to switch players dynamically, depending on the access device.

Their study was conducted from several commanding multimedia websites including ABC, CBS, Hulu and multimedia hosting sites YouTube and the ever-popular growing Vimeo. Apple has not been the only influencer of the HTML5 initiative. Both Google and Microsoft have made their testimonies in stating that Flash will one day head into retirement and HTML5 will be the dominant medium for providing multimedia and complex and interactive content. Google is well underway in taking steps to replacing all of their Flash based content with HTML5 and Microsoft has made H.264 the sole video support of the new Internet Explorer.

HTML5 is not a replacement technology for Flash.

HTML is a language specification which is interpreted by browser developers. Flash is a run-time graphic engine that offers pixel-exact playback across multiple platforms. Adobe does have an “open” specification for the SWF files.

In fact, SWF is more akin to HTML5. They both contain data and the information on how to display the data. The Flash player is more akin to a web browser.

Quite simply, HTML5 is not a replacement for Flash, Silverlight, Java, etc… There is some confusion as some of the features overlap. You could build the TUAW website completely in Flash, but that would be a bad use of that technology. Conversely you can build advanced games in HTML5, but your quality would suffer. Again, a bad use of the technology.

Having HTML5 is great. We have waited a decade for it. About time. It offers some great tools for simple media display that were seriously lacking in HTML4. It won’t replace Flash. Look at what is being made in Flash:

Apple has spread a lot of misinformation about Flash. It is true that Flash apps are being replaced with alternatives for the iPad and iPhone, but it isn’t HTML5. it is native apps. THAT is Apple’s real Flash alternative.

Not all of what you posted is true. I have seen plenty of sites and games that incorporate HTML5 solely and you get the same results as Flash without all that CPU usage. Flash will eventually take a backseat, just like HyperCard. Its not ready for the mobile space.

There have been some rumors going vabout that Apple has pulled AirPrint from the final release of iOS 4.2. Apparently, a rumor came about yesterday claiming that Apple has axed the feature from the iOS 4.2 final release because of some unforeseen circumstances. Distraught by the speculated exemption of the features, a customer decided to shoot Steve Jobs a letter about it to get a further understanding of the matter. Steve replied saying that AirPrint has not been cut from the final version of the anticipated software update.
