Developer Discovers Way to Use Gyroscope + Accelerometer Through Web
With the release of iOS 4.2 last month, Cupertino added a number of features to the software. One of the many added was support for the accelerometer and gyroscope of the iPhone for through Safari, among other HTML5 and W3C standards.
As you may know, all iOS devices have accelerometer sensors (plus magnetometer and gyroscope on some devices). However, as web developers, we didnt have access to such sensors until now. Safari now supports the DeviceOrientation API (W3C draft). Looking at the available objects, it seems that all the API is fully supported (including ondeviceorientation and ondevicemotion events). . .
Maximilliano Firtman coded a demonstration of what’s possible with the new support through a simulation of a ball being rolled at it being controlled by the user by way of the iPhone’s accelerometer.
Apple didn’t widely publicize this features as they did AirPlay and AirPrint, so it may take a while for developer to truly create something that is super functional though web-based means.
Another example is given with the gyroscope of the iPhone. In this demonstration, a panoramic photograph is being panned through. What would be typical click-and-drag functions on a desktop machine, on a iPhone with a gyroscope, the user can simply move his device in the direct of the picture they want to see, as if to turn their head to look at something.
After you capture a panorama with the 360 Panorama app, one can upload the picture, getting the URL to view the experience in Safari Mobile. In essence, the raw jpeg image files are hosted on either TwitPic or yFrog after a user uploads a panorama through 360 Panorama.
After launching the URL in Safari Mobile, one will see “Gyro ON” and simply by moving your phone in any direction, you can have a complete panoramic experience using the photo you’ve captured. Moreover, experiences can be viewed on TwitPic, or the location of the experience using Apple’s “Maps” app.
